This is my first time at selective desaturation. This is a picture of my daughter. It was taken at around noon on easter, so the shadows are not very good, but I really like the way she looks.

I selected my daughter and the inverted the selection. I completely desaturated the background and then applied a guassian blur. I the reinverted the selection and started desaturating my daughter. I tried to leave the magenta and yellows less saturated the the rest. I then did some minor spot editing. I then resized and USM. that was basicly it.

I like the picture, but feel it needs some help. I would appreciate any input on how to make it better. I don't like the shadows in her face and the color of her dress appears to be a little out of sorts.

Thanks

Hi Jeremy!
What a cute picture. :-) One thing I might suggest is when selecting your subject you may want to use the feather feature. This will help soften the edges so that it's not such a sharp edge between her and the background. As for the shadows, one thing you can try is adjusting the shadows and highlights. Theres a tutorial on here that I use sometimes when I get stuck with those pesky shadows. I did a quick rework to soften and adjust the shadows, but without the original it's hard to do it correctly. Hope you don't mind. :-)

She is a cutie.

The little girl seems to be oversharpened and the background way to blurry. Do you know how to use the feather tool? You might want to mess around with that a bit to soften up the edges when using the selection tool.

Keep practicing.

She is a cutie, no bias at all!!! Thanks for all your help. I tried some of the suggestions and that seemed to help. I will post my current try after a bit. Thanks
