I have been invited to participate in a Fine Art Show early next year and I was just wondering if anyone had done one of these before. It is outdoors so I would have to rent a tent and spend some money on getting prints made etc. I would hope to sell some of my photos to make it worthwhile. Are these worth the effort? I kind of want to do it but am not sure about the expense involved versus the income. Thanks for any help.

We do five or six shows per year. We have the big one coming up in a few days. https://www.facebook.com/estesparkartsandcraftsshow A show which attracts a big crowd is definitely worth the effort. The upcoming show is a three day show. Booth fee is $350. We have a tent and display stuff. It will be outside. I use a QwickPAY app with SCRA (Secure Card Reader Attachment) for credit card processing. Most of the shows in which we participate are juried, which means the approved artists sell only their own work.

Only you can determine if it's "worth it". First, what are your goals as a photographer? Do you want to develop a fine arts portfolio, have gallery shows, etc.? Then yes, it's worth the experience/expense/etc.

That being said, and realistically speaking, unless your images really resonate with the audience (i.e. wildlife shots in a predominantly nature-loving community, beach/shore images in a beach community, etc.), or unless you or your subjects are really well known, it is unlikely you will sell enough to even break even. Add to that the cost of renting space and tent, and that your images need to be priced "competitively", and you can see this is an exercise in "experience."

Of course, you might be The One that breaks all the rules and hits it out of the park the first time at bat :-)

You might get even better-quality advice if you can describe the setting/audience in a bit more detail and post (at least some of) the images you're thinking of trying to sell, and what prices you're considering.

I am not sure of the prices or what I would sell yet as I have never done this before. I am still researching all of that as the show isn't until early 2014. The location is in north Florida and I have sold some wildlife photos to people around where I live in Florida but not anything like at a show.
