I plead guilty. Could be argued that is the purpose of photography, to move the viewer emotionally. But I won't say that is the whole deal, only an important part. Emotional impact and technically quality don't always go hand in hand.

That's still often talked about, which it should be, and my parents remember the shock and horror that went out when it happened. Visiting the cemetery high up on the hill is both beautiful and overwhelmingly sad. I hadnt seen this series of image before, although a lot like it, so thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I saw the topic and came running to see what people were talking about / looking at. And while these vietnam and firefighter pictures are full of emotion, they really aren't very good "pictures" are they??? (or *is* it just me?)

Now *there* is a photo that could be classified in the "best ever" category! Thanks for sharing, I'd love to see more.

To me, "best photo" doesn't mean "most technically correct photo" or "Prettiest photo to look at". DPChallenge has plenty enough of *THAT* type of photo. What the vietnam and firefighter photos have.. if not technical excellence, or stunning visual quality, is what really makes the photograph great... the fact that they capture human nature at it's rawest. Emotion is as much a part of *real* photography as it is a part of life itself. This is one thing I find truly lacking in most of the shots we get here.. but then, we can't expect to find a truly emotional subject to shoot every week during a contrived challenge now can we.. so we instead go for improving ourselves technically and compositionally.. and maybe, perhaps, one day.. we'll get a chance to come across that truly magical moment.. or that truly devastating moment.. and be able to capture it.. and it'll be the best photograph we've ever taken.. and it'll far outshine *any* of the eye candy shown here, or anything else we have in our portfolios that we're so proud of.

*THAT*'s why I choose something like the firefighter.. or the photo of Kim Phuc.. or the coal mine disaster shots.. not because they're always so pretty.. or compositionally sound.. or technically superb.. but because they are a capture of humanity. Flawed, Raw, and absolutely stunning.

Outside of the most affecting shots I've ever seen - and one of those, let's face it, is a snapshot of my grandfather and my uncle together - I think this may be the best shot I know of.

Sorry about the watermark :-$

Ever since visiting the OKC Memorial, I just can't look at the firefighter/little girl picture. That little girl didn't survive, and her mother still has to see that picture over and over and over.

Which is one reason it's so Raw.. and one reason I linked to it.. I understand that not everyone wants to see it... or can, emotionally.

I also have a two year old daughter. That, of course, makes it even harder to see. I believe it won a pulitzer.

So far, the images posted have all shown powerful emotions. Raw emotion, that's what stands out to us. Pain, agony, sorrow. And I agree that these are some of the greates photographs. But still an interesting look of human nature.

I think another one would be Sharbat Gula, Pakistan, 1984 by Steve Mccurry.

I would like to play devil's advocate for a post. I really like this photo, but not for the same reasons as most people. I don't see anything great about lighting, composition, posing, etc. What I love about this photo is the fact that none of these things are present. I love how she looks like she could gut the photog from his belly to his balls without thinking twice about it. I love how she is so fearful of her surroundings that her glare burn a hole right through you. I love how you can see a hint of relief, almost a smile because it's not a gun pointed at her head. But it has to be the eyes. The doorway to her bleeding soul.

It's not just you, nor is it everybody including you, either.

"Best picture" means different things to different people and for some, those of a PJ turn of thought, the "art" of photography is the art of capturing the moment. For them (us, for I include myself in that number) the technical aspects are only a means to that end and need only be good enough to achieve that goal.

I've seen a lot of good, even great, pictures here - but nearly all of them (because of the nature of the competition) are manufactured. The art (which is valid and which I don't mean to disparage) is in the setup and the imagination and the post processing. From a PJ's POV the "art" of photography is in the timing and positioning and foresight and wit to capture a moment worth capturing and do it well enough.

From a PJ POV almost any manipulation in (e.g.) Photoshop is a corruption of and criticism of the original picture, because you are no longer capturing the moment you are creating a new one.

They are 2 completely different and in some ways diametrically opposed viewpoints - even though most of us exhibit a little of both.

I took this picture a few minutes ago, of my neigbours dogs play fighting. I can see a hundred things wrong with it technically, but I personally like the picture because I feel it captures the moment very, very well. I saw something worth getting and I GOT it and to me that's the most important thing I look for in a photograph.

If the emotions in this thread are too raw for you - how about "The Kiss"; that picture of the WWII soldier and the nurse. There are probably technical things wrong with THAT picture, too - but it's a PJ photographer's dream picture none the less.
