Bingo. Poll police officers as to how many ever smoked pot.

eta: Actually, poll Police officers as to how many of them wear seat belts. Then go search YouTube for videos on citizens busting cops for not wearing seat belts.

Somehow (and sadly) I don't think ER docs are as prone to lying as police officers. After seeing your first few cases when someone went through the windshield or was thrown from the vehicle, wearing a seatbelt seems like a good idea, not an infringement on my constitutional rights (which, BTW, do not list driving a motor vehicle).

FWIW my dad installed seatbelts in our 1964 Ford Econoline van before they were available as built-in equipment.

I'm not going into the business of busting your balls, but not wearing a seatbelt does endanger other drivers. Ever try to make an extreme maneuver while not belted in? You won't stay in your seat, unless you have a car that has very form-fitting seats and a console.

My brother rarely wore a seatbelt until he was first on the scene at a flipped truck (ended up laying on drivers side). A kid about 10 - 12 was standing on top of his mom saying over and over...I think she's dead. My brother got the kid out of the truck and saw the ladies head crushed with brain matter all over. Apparently when they rolled over her head went out of the window and the truck rolled on top of it.

The kid said that his mom was going pretty slow and she just leaned over to pick something up when they flipped.

So my brother buckles up now, but prefers to ride his ATV and motorcycle without a helmet...he said he would rather die on impact than be messed up for life.

Or for TEXTING WHILE DRIVING.

I recently got pulled for this. I was sitting at a red light! As soon as the light turned green, I put the phone down and started driving. Stupid cop. End of month quotas to meet. SMH.

yet, I see cops every day texting while driving. Oh... that's right... they ARE the law so they don't have to follow it. silly me.

I'm not saying a seat belt hasn't saved my life. I was in an accident where I was T-Boned by someone going 45 miles an hour. A lawyer, talking on his phone, not paying attention to the fact that he had a red light.
So did the seat belt save me? Probably.
Did me wearing it save other people's lives? Probably not.

I have been in situations where I had to react on a dime's notice, and have been able to do so... with or without a seatbelt.

Ok... enough debating about seat belts and helmets, lol... back to the original post... I got a bike!

Any suggestions on aftermarket items for this beauty?

Any websites?

Any anything?

First I would suggest the Basic MSF course. Usually a 2 day course that covers laws and riding. Most people have reported that it costs about $100 and they provide the bike. I took mine before starting to ride a few years ago and I didn't even have to take a riding test for the license endorsement.

Have fun fixing it, and be safe riding it. If you search the web I'm sure there are sites that are dedicated to your bike. I have a 2003 Suzuki Volusia and there is a great dedicated site that helps with maintenance, repair, and blinging it out.

Already looked into the class. Gonna take it in the spring, that way it gives us some time to fix it up. Looks like its gonna cost roughly $125.

And bookmarked the 750ace.com site.

And we subscribe to JPCycles for some parts and such. Just wasn't sure if others had any ideas.
And thanks!

When FourPointx was looking at buying a Suzuki Volusia/Boulevard I pointed him to the Volusia Riders site and it gave him great insight for the capabilities of the bike. The site has been around a very long time and people with all makes and brands are on the site. They upgrade the bike but stay on the VR site. They also schedule rallies around the world to go to. I kind of feel that the VR site to me is the DPC for bikes. We have paid off bikes for people, donated hardware, and they also know plumbing, gardening, well let's just say it is very similar to DPC except different.

And they probably have a photo expert somewhere on there too. ;)

If you sign your Organ Donor card you can do whatever you want on your motorcycle. If you don't, then I'm not on your side.

Oh, if you DO crash without your helmet and survive, please pay all your medical bills. I didn't make you not wear a helmet so I don't want to foot the bill.

That will be all.

I'm an organ donor

And I pay my medical bills, I don't rely on the government (aka the taxpayers) to pay my way through anything.

I have always been one...
But once I saw what Dallas went through, I really understood the immensity of being one. So many people who have donated their organs... Because of them, Dallas was able to have "cadaver skin" put on until he could have his skin grafts.

I remember being in the peds ICU and a little girl passed away. The parents came to us and said they were donating her organs and that they wanted us to use her skin. It was such a wonderful gesture (they didn't use hers, because of the process it has to go through) but the fact they offered that told me so much about who they were as people.
I'll never forget that.

Hopefully that remains the case, but if you're left in a state where you need 24/7 care or to live in a care facility, that can easily and quickly outstrip what your insurance will pay and your ability to pay.

Just to show you how much the VR site is compared to this these are some of the same arguments that go on there. It's just like Nikon vs. Canon. Wear your helmet when you shoot! Use the right lens when you ride!

From my riding experience as a passenger, the helmet causes more problems than good. My husband says the same thing about it as the one on the front. It causes problems in peripheral vision, the wind pulls it, and it's just uncomfortable.

Sure, if we crashed, I would want to be wearing a helmet... but so far, there have been none.

And once I begin riding (as a non passenger) I will definitely want to wear a helmet for a while. But on the open road, where helmet laws aren't required, you can bet I won't be wearing one

I've been riding bikes for exactly 40 years. I also own a Harley (Electraglide). First of all no one in my family is allowed on the back of my bike without a helmet - end of conversation. Secondly over the years I've scooped a few people off the highway from car versus motorcycle accidents. Secondly In my 40 years I've been involved in (3) accidents.

The last accident my bike, which weights 850 lbs. when gassed up, went down after I lost traction on some sand at an intersection during Laconia's bike week. My leg was badly twisted and ultimately a red hot muffler pinned my lower leg to the hot tar - and I mean 850 lbs. of pinning. Had it not been for my brother bikers I never would have gotten that bike off me.

In addition had I not worn high motorcycle boots (mid calve) then that hot muffler would have burnt a whole through my flesh into my bone. Despite all the bleeding and bruises those boots saved my neck.

Now for the helmet. I've hit trucks head on (because they turned in front of me). I've been thrown from the bike into the side of the road and I've been slammed down onto the pavement bouncing my head as skull meets road. Had it not been for my helmet there would be no Trotterjay here today.

I bought a top grade helmet from Harley but it does not go over my ears. That is about as much as a sacrifice as I'm comfortable making. As a result there is no noise restriction. There is no loss of peripheral vision. There is added heat during hot days (get a vented helmet). But big deal, it gets hot lying down in a pool of blood on a hot summers day too.

When I ride with my brothers I admit I don't look cool with the wind blowing threw my hair like they do but damn I'm still here and my chances of surviving the next crash are going to be far better than theirs.

Be safe. Happy riding!

I definitely plan on taking the course. The basic and then the more experienced.

Also, took a quick shot while at our storage building. Right now, there isn't much we can do... and the picture quality of this is horrible...
(sorry for being so blurry).
Anyways... here she is in all her beauty:

LOTS AND LOTS of work to do. Can't wait!!!
