What is the difference between macro adapter (for a p&s) and close-up filters. Wich is better (I assume it's the macro adapter) and why. I'm planning to buy one or the other but still can't decide.

Are you talking about screw-on macro filters such as the Canon 250D, Canon 500D, Olympus MCON40, Nikon 4T, etc?

If so, these are higher quality versions of the cheap close-up filters. They have two elements and better glass coating that improve image quality, reduce/eliminate CA and other abberations.
