I thought sharpening was meant to be the very last thing you do, after you have done whatever else it is you want to do with the photo.

How does this work with C1?

Genuine question as I use C1 and love it, so I might investigate sharpening there as currently I do the USM thing in PS.

I don't use C1, or even have a camera that produces RAW output ... but I'll comment on this anyway. :)

Sharpening during the capture phase is fine; if all you are wanting to do is restore the sharpness lost due to the sensor pixelating the image into a file. Beyond that, sharpening is an aesthetic adjustment (giving an image that extra bit of clarity and 'pop', perhaps only in certain areas), and is usually best to do after all other aesthetic adjustments.

Multi-pass sharpening is an idea that different types of sharpening needs to be done at different points in the post-processing work-flow. Bruce Fraser has an excellent overview of multi-pass sharpening work-flows contained in 4 articles over at CreativePro. The last of these is located here (linked to the last because it in turn links to the previous 3).

Lately, my final output is from C1. I will sharpen again using USM if I resize for posting to the web.
