help! my speedlite died and I want to try one of these LED things. except for sunpak, Im finding brands I never heard of. I like the specs on the link below (a DLC DL-DV112 Video & Digital SLR LED Shoe-Mount Camera Variable Light), but it doesnt have the diffuser and warming inserts that others have. where are some good reviews on these things? I want only for my canon 5D mk II and mainly for stills - I very rarely do HD vids. Im in manhattan at night a lot and can think of some cool shots using one of these.

any help appreciated!

LED's are getting better, but they still produce only a fraction of the light that a speedlite will put out. So you will need to make compromises in shutter speed or aperture.

It's also important to understand how they operate. A speedlite dumps an insane amount of light in a fraction of a second. But LED's will produce a small amount of light and keep it on for the whole duration of the shutter. With a speedlite that allows you to use any shutter speed you want and still freeze motion. With LED you can only freeze motion by having a fast shutter. Not only that, but the LED doesn't dump all it's light at once so you get less light the shorter your shutter is.

But when it comes to video, LED is king. With video it has to be on all the time anyway, so LED works perfect.

I watched one of the creative live seminars and he was using the LED lights for wedding shots and dramatic lighting. I agree, it will be only a fraction of the light of a flash, but he swore by them!

I bought one of the LED macro ring lights and it wasn't very bright. But apparently the arrays are better.
