sigma is making some pretty big strides lately.

if they can be consistent about their quality and get it right (even with slightly higher prices), i think i might start buying Sigma from now on...

that always been the big knock, however the new 35/1.4 has been getting stellar reviews and i haven't heard much along the lines of quality issues that plagued older products.

They are certainly making strides. In addition, Canon's pricing strategy the past few years has made third party lenses a much more attractive deal.

ETA: there is also the rumor that Sigma is working on a 24-70 f/2 that will cover the full 35mm frame (!)

they certainly have me looking elsewhere.

I was seriously considering picking up a 500/4, back before the "II" version came out. Prices were running about $5300 USD. Now we're looking at a whopping $10k for the new version. The 300/2.8 used to go for $3400. Now it's $6800.
Do the "II" versions warrant a doubling in price? I don't think so, Tim.

Well... The 300 f/2.8 warrants just about any price - that's the most amazing lens I've ever used. Otherwise, generally no. :D
