| sigma is making some pretty big strides lately. |

| if they can be consistent about their quality and get it right (even with slightly higher prices), i think i might start buying Sigma from now on... |

that always been the big knock, however the new 35/1.4 has been getting stellar reviews and i haven't heard much along the lines of quality issues that plagued older products. |

They are certainly making strides. In addition, Canon's pricing strategy the past few years has made third party lenses a much more attractive deal.
ETA: there is also the rumor that Sigma is working on a 24-70 f/2 that will cover the full 35mm frame (!)

I was seriously considering picking up a 500/4, back before the "II" version came out. Prices were running about $5300 USD. Now we're looking at a whopping $10k for the new version. The 300/2.8 used to go for $3400. Now it's $6800.
Do the "II" versions warrant a doubling in price? I don't think so, Tim. |

Well... The 300 f/2.8 warrants just about any price - that's the most amazing lens I've ever used. Otherwise, generally no. :D |
