dunno - but looks better at high res.

why would the monitor offer a distorted option?

That resolution exists because there *are* monitors out there that have a that aspect ratio.. (Mostly older models, but some newer ones I think). 1280x960 is the resolution to use if you want to stick with the aspect ratio of the 800x600/1024x768/1600x1200 ladder of resolutions, but it's really not *THAT* important.. I just like to ask people if they have a specific reason for using it, or if they just use it because...

and because I'm a geek :)

it looks good so i use it.

it looks better than 1024x768 - being a geek i'd think you'd run a higher res...

I do run a higher res.. I run 1280x960 I was just using 1024x768 as an example.

It's a personal preference.. I don't like the stretching, and my monitor doesn't do 1600x1200

1600x1200x32bits on my NEC with Radeon 9800xt card

1344x1008 @ 85hz. It's the highest resolution my ViewSonic G790 will do at 85hz without making strange noises.
