Just started to use raw and I'm concerned about the status of the originals.

When I use the PS CS Browse to open the RAW files it automatically allows me to make a number of changes to the image.

My question is do these changes mean that my original has altered therefor if requested to submit an original I would not actually have one any more? Or is that still considered to be an original as it is part of the raw system.

Thanks in advance. Bob

Hi Bob,

PS CS can't save in RAW format. The RAW file's integrity is assured.

PS can not save in raw formats, so there is not need to worry about loosing the initial camera data.

When you're done making adjustments to your raw file using the Raw file converter plug in, click ok and the image will open up as a CRW file (on Canon it's a CRW, not sure about Fuji. At this point I duplicate the image and save it with a new file name. I will then continue making adjustments to this duplicate image to save as tiff file... and later on as a jpg for web. This way you keep you original CRW files that you need to submit in case there is a dq request or you made the top 5 in the challenge.

Technically not true. PS CS can save as a Photoshop RAW file. Has the tag .RAW.
It WILL NOT overwrite your RAW file, because it most likely does not support it (ie: mine is .NEF for Nikon).
You may be thinking also about if you do some adjustments to a RAW file and then hold down the Option (or Alt) key and then click Update instead of opening it (ie: to do a Batch RAW conversion of many similiar files), from what I understand it puts this info into a different file, a .xmp file instead.
If it does go "into the file" I don't think that is considering "tampering" with the original. If you notice when you open a RAW file and then make settings adjustments, (opening or updating it after) the thumbnail and preview image change to reflect those setting changes. Try it, you'll see.

Thanks guys... After reading your comments I was able to find a (revert?) button that discards all changes and again views as original as from camera.

So basically it is just the software that remembers the changes and it reapplies when that file is viewed again rather than saving the changes made.

Cheers
