My friend and I bought imitation batteries off of ebay for 10 bucks each as back ups and I find mine as good if not better than the Nikon battery. Having the extra battery came in handy on more than on occasion. It was worth every penny.

By all means, get the kit lens (the 18-70)! It's very sharp, focuses extremely fast, and has a very useful focal length range. I would also say that for the beginning, just get one lens and then try to find out what else you need. You might want more wide-angle rather than telephoto, for example, or a faster lens for portraits and available light (I love my 50/1.8).
I also got a spare battery (Nikon original), and am happy I bought it. It's just useful to have, even if the battery life of the D70 is really great. And I also believe that even with LiIon batteries, charging an (almost) empty battery is better than if its still half full.

I'm gonna go after this, I think it is a good deal.
