Nothing is being taken away from you, if special challenges like this come up. To me, it appears to be a small way to reward (maybe not the best term) the folks that participate the most to this site and help it grow.
Think of it more of an "added" benefit of the site. Although it's a benefit that I wouldn't qualify for, based on the requirements in the first post.

When I joined this site and paid my "about $2/month" among the benefits was the ability to participate in "members only" challenges. I didn't then and don't now see any mention of "super member" or "masters" or other unique statuses that would preclude me, a full member, from entering certain events.
This site worked pretty good under the conditions I signed up for and, unless you change the Ts and Cs please stop playing silly games.

thats still a lot to ask for...I know I used to comment a lot more than I do now but I became very discouraged over comments because of the helpful checkbox.
Why don't we all just admit it there should have been two challenges running at the same time first a masters then a second challenge for those who couldn't participate in the masters challenge. We wouldn't be here having this discussion if it weren't for being LEFT out of a FREE STUDY!

Yes, by all means, let's bring that up again. |

For the last time, there is not a scheduled Free Study competition which anyone is losing out on. There have been two Free Study challenges posted about three months apart, and after extensive discussion in both the public forums and among the Site Council it has been made abundantly and repeatedly clear that any such "additional" challenges (including Speed Challenges or anything other than the two regularly-scheduled challenges) are extra bonuses offered when, why, and however they feel like it by the site admins.
While almost all changes and challenges here at are the suggestion of site users, it is not a democracy, and there should be no expectation of service beyond the basic ones outlined at the time you joined. While they may have made a mistake in ettiquette in their presentation of this particular "feature" I find the flaming they've taken over this issue most disheartening; as I said before, if I were in charge of coding site improvements, I'd be planning a long vacation right now. |

I have read posts twice in this thread and several in others that have said the september free study that wasn't posted was an oversight and they are still planning one, so who is getting left out? |

Obviously everyone who isn't included in the masters challenge, cause as of yet there hasn't been a second free study for the rest of us. And to make it a weekly challenge isn't going to be the same. All members pay the same amount to say they are members so we should all have a members only month long free study at the exact same time.
But since that didn't happen saying LEFTOUT is appropriate.

is anyone else getting tired of the term 'troll'?
Just bc you vote above 5 doesnt, mean everyone else has to.
How come every good idea has to be marred by some disgrutled person?
I beginning to get bored with it all!

Just because "as of yet" doesn't mean there isn't going to be one. Again, the SC has posted SEVERAL times that they do intend one.
And Rooster, yes I am getting tired of the term "troll". Nobody seems to complain about people with 6+ voting averages being trolls, but IMO they can't be voting on every photo with averages that high, just the ones they think are "worthy". |

I disagree there, if the person voting starts out at a 5 for average then adds or subtracts from there....any photo that is in relative good focus would be a 5, a six for being visually pleasing a 7 for orginality, 8 would include some interest 9 would be the almost WOW and 10 would be WOW factor. On the other end 4 would be photo just isn't focused well enough or is to grainy or noisy. 3 would be Nice photo but not meeting the challenge 2 would be does not meet challenge and isn't a good photo and 1 would be simply BAD.
Using that as a basic tool for voting that person would be giving out a lot of 6, 7 and 8s

Actually, 5.5 is the mathematical voting average on a scale of 1-10, not 5.0. If you add up all of the numbers between 1 and 10, it equals 55. Divide that by 10 and the average possible vote (since we can't rate a photograph as a 0) is 5.5.

We all know there are many styles of voting, and many sets of criteria used. The site has deemed all of these schemes as valid, so long as they are applied consistently to all photos voted-on.
This is not the place to take up the debate on whether there should be any one site-approved method of voting or rating scale. A person's average vote is not indicative of the quality of their photographic evaluations. A person who gives out a lot of 3's and 4's along with suggestions for improving those to 6's and 7's is doing a greater service to the site than someone who merrily skips around the entries writing "Great - 8!" |

Actually, the Masters' Challenge is only open to members, though the requisite ribbons may be from either open or member challenges.

Did you read this post? It should clear up the your apparent misconception about being left out of a free study.

Again I have to differ with the way you characterize the group called "Masters'". They, as a group, are not the ones who have inspired me the most. In fact, I am often appalled at the judgement of the voters. There have been many comments about the type of photo that wins here. For lack of a better term I'll call them "formulaic" as you did. I wish we could find a way to break away from the pattern of formulaic winners. The Mastres' Challenge will do more harm than good in this regard. Indeed, the very thing that you say bores the Mastres' to the point of driving them away is being repeated on a glorified level. |
