My entry into the 'You name it' challenge was of one of my pugs. That shot was taken with a fisheye. I had some wonderful and funny titles given. Sadly, some felt it was fine to give titles such as "No, not even its mother loved this face", "Im really not that Ugly", "Mr. Ugly", "Breeding A Dog This Ugly Has Got To Be A Sin". While I am a pretty thick skinned person, these titles stung a bit. I would never use any of them to describe anybody's family member - whether it be human or non-human. Those type comments are simply insulting. People please think before commenting. While you may not care for the look of my pug, I happen to think pugs are adorable. You probably think your child or pet is adorable....would you want me to leave comments suggesting they were ugly?

Insensitive. I sometimes wonder whether people would be the same way face2face or if it is just the fact that over the internet some people feel untouchable and dare to be - how should I put it ..."less tactful"

I once had a big argue with someone online who was extremely rude to me.. 1 year later the club had a meet up and he was there and I gently reminded him that it was me he was threatening and if he still felt the same way we could pop around the corner and sort things out man to man ... guess what ... he actually started shaking and almost crying and said in a very loud voice for all to hear, "Im not well, Im on medication please don't hit me".

This is the internet, this is the human race, mix it together and you have 2 options, both of which you have experienced.. sometimes it can be rewarding and wonderful and other times it can be hurtful .. my advice? Ignore it, you love your dogs and you care for them so screw what others may think.

That is just my opinion of cause :)

It's probably an attempt at being funny - I doubt they intended to insult you. Personally, I love your pug shots. But more importantly, everyone who saw your 'puppy love' shot loved them as well, a much wider audience.

so let me get this straight you entered a dog that isn't known as being visually appealing into a name the picture challenge and you are shocked that people attempted to make humorous titles?

The bit about "sin" is a touch too much. Otherwise, it's their "ugliness" that makes them cute.

I'm kind of with Mike here - and that's going some :)! Add a fisheye lens to the straight-down perspective and even the most "visually appealing" dog - or child or woman - will be distorted and may look, well, ugly, to some. I think you are being over-sensitive in this case. I wasn't one of the "offenders", but had I been, I would now feel genuinely bad about my attempt at humor. I might even regret having participated in what was, imo, a wonderfully fun and fresh challenge: that of naming as many entries as I possibly could.

Shutterpug - try not to feel hurt - remember entries are anonymous - no one set out to insult 'your' dog. Everyone who posts a pic of a friend or family member is subjected to this kind of evaluation by the cold eyes of strangers -- but this challenge was more extreme because of nudge to name it.

Since I was called out as one of the comments that you were offended by let me explain. Its similar to what nam and Mike mentioned in the fact that if you take a picture of an animal that isn't known for its charisma and you distort those features to a point that makes it funny, almost caricature like, I think you will always receive those types of comments in a blind challenge. I wasn't trying to be insensitive or mean just an attempt at humor with a little reality. Im sorry if you were offended.

Agreed

Forgive me for saying so, but, Linda, did you really look at that image and think 'how cute!'?

..

I really liked the nose in the photo, and the overall effect was totally wonky-cool.

With that being said?

The eyes look super creepy distorted like that, which really did make the little pug look almost scary and creepy.

Now is it scary, ugly, or creepy in real life? Not at all, I'm sure. I bet it's super friendly and happy (living with you it must be).

But, in reality, people weren't commenting on your dog at all. They were commenting on a picture. Quite an unusual one at that.

Some babies aren't visually appealing in the beginning but I would not call them out as being ugly. All I am saying is people could use some restraint when it comes to using such harsh descriptions.

I will, babies are ugly, especially when they are first born. Only mine seem to have gotten cuter as they got older.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I thought your dog was cute! When I got my first Weimaraner my aunt asked me why I got such an ugly dog...sigh.
