Earlier this year, the Chicago Sun-Times canned its photographers.

The Chicago Tribune still uses staff photographers

It is not only about who is better. Photography is all about storytelling in news. If the images tells a story, and shares the news experiences with the reader, then it is a good image regardless of who took it or what sort of camera / cellphone was used to take it. In news, you rarely have a second chance to capture the image that tells the story best. It is all about being there. However, generally a professional photographer is better trained and possesses the right skills to capture the essence of a story and share it with the readers. In contrast, the pure mass of citizen journalism is so powerful, that it may be able to achieve the same or better results. I say that we need a blended strategy of both, using one or the other fails the reader.

If you will note, the blogger does not say anything bad about the reporters who are now shooting photos as well, admitting that if the photographers had to write the stories, their writing would be equally shaky.

This is not "citizen journalism" ala CNN, this is the work of reporters, employed by the paper, trying their hand at photography.
