If the images tells a story, and shares the news experiences with the reader, then it is a good image regardless of who took it or what sort of camera / cellphone was used to take it. In news, you rarely have a second chance to capture the image that tells the story best. It is all about being there. However, generally a professional photographer is better trained and possesses the right skills to capture the essence of a story and share it with the readers. In contrast, the pure mass of citizen journalism is so powerful, that it may be able to achieve the same or better results. I say that we need a blended strategy of both, using one or the other fails the reader. |
This is not "citizen journalism" ala CNN, this is the work of reporters, employed by the paper, trying their hand at photography. |
