If I'm in an area with enough space, my 70-200 f/2.8 VR is my favorite. If I'm indoors and have enough space to move about, I'll use either my 105 Nikkor f/2.8 macro, or my 28-70 f/2.8 Nikkor. They all have nice bokeh for blurring the background and are very sharp. If I'm shooting in lower light, I'll use my Nikkor 50mm f/1.8.
Guess the answer is, most of my lenses :-)

When I had my Nikon F3's, my favorite lens for portraits was the 105 f1.8
Sadly, this lens is not available in an AF version. |

I'll trade morgan my 105 Macro for his 105mm f/2.0 DC :-D
In all seriousness, my post was to show that there are a lot of lenses that will take good portraits. It's up to the situation as to which lens is best, in my opinion anyway.
