I just picked up these from ebay. I just picked them up cause I see other people using them but how do you use them. Just when you want to tint your flash color? |

Tinting the flash color as well as the entire scene.
I once saw a great tutorial how a photog created a beautifully lit interior shot of a kitchen. There were no windows from the angle but he used multiple gelled flashes to create the effect of sunset.
I'll try to post it if i find the link.

Link to Strobist using gels
Another strobist link to gels
Gels used for color correction of the available light... I'm sure some one will have a more detailed answer. |

I have a couple sets that I used in studio or against a white backdrop to come up with any solid color you want. You could also shoot through them to use as a makeshift filter. They slide into the barn doors on my alien bee kit.
This was shot against a white cyclonic wall with red gels going against the wall, and a blue gel on the girl to make her look "cold"
This one gelled too in an attempt to match the color of that glorious drink
This one recently ribboned using gels

Used for a number of reasons including the addition of color to a usually neutral background. When using them for this reason it's important to keep some distance between the subject and the background so you don't get unwanted spill onto the back of hair and skin high lights. Usually a low powered background flash pointed away from the subject at an angle that will not reflect back.
Most of the gels are colors that are used for effect, such as firing a bright red gelled flash at a brink wall a night with a concentrated zoomed lens to add effect. That sort of thing.
The CTO - Color Temperature Orange gel, the CTB - Color Temp Blue are two of the more important and commonly used ones. They are normally used to color balance different light sources. Suppose you are in a room that is lit predominately by tungsten lamps, but you need additional fill light on your subject. If you used a bare flash which has a daylight temp to it's light you will get mixed lighting that will add a color cast and look less than natural. If you set your white balance to tungsten, and then gel your flash with a CTO gel you will add light with a natural look. The gels have different cuts which represent the density of the color. So for CTO you would normally have a full CTO, 1/2 CTO and a 1/4 cut CTO. Which one you use would depend of how you are trying to balance the light.
Another example would be shooting a person against a warm sunset. Daylight flashes are color temped for mid day light when it's not as warm. So adding a fill flash to a subject at sunset will also give you a cooler fill on your subject which does not look natural. So again...using one of your CTO cuts and and shooting on daylight WB will do the trick.
If a scene is to warm and you want to cool it off use a CTB. You get the idea.
The light green and magenta gels are used to adjust the tint of a scene more than the color. Most older fluorescent lights gave a greenish tint to human skin. Using a magenta gel on your flash or strobes would pull that green tint more to natural levels.
So many uses of them. Just do some reading on them, and more importantly experiment and have fun seeing the great results you can have with them.
