I wanted to give the heavier lightroom adjustments a real shot (local adjustments, gradients, spot and what not). For the majority of pics from a recent trip, I used lightroom only - and for some reason, this has significantly slowed the poor thing down.
Anyone else here experience this? Know a way to help this little problem go away? My computer does a pretty good job of handling similar adjustments in photoshopcs6 and i m pretty much sold on the use of these tools minus the heavy lag they make me go through. |

Not an uncommon issue... one reason that adjustments of similar type may be slower in Lr is that Lr does not use GPU acceleration, whereas Ps does. No word on when it is coming to Lr (it's not going to be in Lr 5).
What kind of hardware are you running it on? Which version are you running? |

Its a fairly decent machine. Stats are below.Lightroom is version 4. I was hoping the CPU would handle things pretty well even without the card... Its too bad, the features are useful - but i don't know that i can deal with the slowdowns. Fun fact - even conversions to jpegs are taking 3x as long with these shots.

You are running similar hardware to my home desktop machine, with the exception that you have 16GB of RAM, I am only running 8 at this time. I don't have trouble with spot adjustments slowing the interface down at all. I did notice that 6D files tend to take a little longer to process, but in general the interface is fairly snappy, none of the lag that I used to experience in 3.x
I also run Lr 4.4 on my work laptop, which is a slower quad-core i7 with 8GB of RAM, and it also does a good job with the 6D files. That's the main machine that I process the 6D's output on, it's one the two cameras that I have dedicated to microcsopy. |

i have similar issues, some days spots edits will drive the processor crazy (i can hear the fan kick up every time i apply one) and other days its not an issue, the other thing that gives fits is changing between presets.
i was thinking processor upgrade would be in the works, but if you are having issues with an i7, maybe i wont do it.

I don't do a ton of gradient or spot corrections at work, so I thought I'd give it run to see if it slowed the interface at all. It did not. This is working with 6D files, so they are very good sized RAW files. this is the i7 laptop with an i7 3720QM @ 2.6 GHz. 8GB of RAM installed (max for the mobo). So it seems that there is something going on that may be specific to certain systems, or certain settings. I'd check the following settings:
- How much memory Lr is allowed to use
- Cache settings; location and size
- Preview settings

Sorry for asking an OT question but is there any way to copy the edits made to an image in LR4 to a file for use in a DPC submission. |

Not that I know of... but even if it were possible, I'd recommend against it. It would produce a very long list of rather unhelpful action descriptions. Much better to summarize what you did, something like the following:
- Applied custom white balance of 3548 K
- Adjusted exposure to -.24
- Applied gradient to darken sky, -.5
- Removed spots
- Applied NR
- Applied post-crop vignette
This concise list will be of much greater help to the SC when/if they need to do validation. Believe me when I say, an exported history list from Ps is pretty much useless when you are trying to reproduce editing steps. If I had to pay a dollar for every four-letter word I said during such an exercise, I'd be broke! A list from Lr would be no better.

You could be having problems related to this old bug...
//forums.adobe.com/thread/655942?start=80&tstart=0
I notice some programs run heavier (more memory) and yet slower when you have a lot of memory--Chrome is one such beast. (I have 16GB too)

i hadn't exported out the last few projects i worked - so i did that, thinking maybe that will help. it did not.
previews are set to 1:1
The LR camera raw cache is set to 30 gigs on
My process was a bit lengthy - separated out the type of images, made some large scale camera calibration adjustments ( i treat landscapes differently esp with the greens and blues involved. Then made basic exposure, saturation and clarity adjustments, and copied them to the similar images. Then i worked in some graduated filters and adjustment brush at the end. By the time i came back to graduate filter adjustments for the last few - things got really slow.
I rebooted computer, and hoped that would take care of any memory issues. Didn't help, worked through slowly - finished off then exported files - super slow lightroom.
This morning i cleaned up temp files. looked at my resources while i had lr do some exporting work. 50%cpu load and about 1500mb of ram usage at max. The solid state disk does not look like its struggling at all. its still slower than usual.
Then i made some adjustment brush and graduated adjustments. It was slow - stopped using my pen tool and used the mouse instead.. For whatever reason, things got quicker. i don't get why - the cpu doesnt look maxed out or anything. Things did get a bit less laggy with the mouse.
mystery remains more or less unsolved.

Will look further into that Neil - thanks
edit: one thing that the thread suggested was that my lens correction option may be part of the problem... Donno if i m willing to part with it.

I doubt if that's the root of it. I use the lens correction (manual options) set to correct some optical distortion and CA that is inherent in the microscope adapters I have. It's set as a default option for processing both my 5D and 6D files from the 'scopes. I have not noticed an impact due to using it.
