I have just received a Canon 40D purchased on Ebay to replace my broken 40D.

I am sure something is not quite right with the functionality to set the autofocus point.

On my previous Canon 40D I am sure if I pressed the AF Point Selection / Enlarge button it would let me rotate around the different auto focus points. This does not appear to be working on this Canon 40D.

What happens if I press the AF Point Selection button when in a creative mode such as "P" - all the auto focus points briefly light up. I am sure previously one or more would remain lit up and using the wheel I could rotate around the different points.

I am testing with "P" mode - ONE SHOT and evaluative metering.

I am following the manual as to how to do this and have also tried the following troubleshooting steps.

I have tested with 2 different lenses
I have removed both batteries over night
I have reset all camera settings
Lens are set to AF

So assuming I have a problem, any idea how serious? Possibly some cleaning required or is it a visit to Canon required :(

-- Update I have noticed it works when I try it in C1, C2 or C3 modes. Not sure if this has any relevance but when in the other creative modes I can see C.Fn on the top display panel. Possibly this is not relevant and just the norm. I can't remember if this was visible on my previous 40D.

check the menu, i think you can change the behavior of how the buttons control this.

Thanks for the reply Mike. I had performed a hard reset on my previous 40D a few times and never had to change anything on the menu to make it work. I have performed a hard reset as mentioned and reset all settings to default settings and cleared all custom settings but still no joy.

I had first thought something needed cleaned but as it seems to work perfectly in the custom C1, C2 and C3 modes, I am not sure why it should not work in the other creative modes.

I hope I am just being dumb and that I haven't bought a lemon. Everything else appears OK apart from quite a few thin fibre like objects in the view finder - these do not appear on the photos.

Actually Mike - I think I may be just being dumb. I have just tested it by using the joystick and this allows me to move the focus point around so perhaps this is the default behaviour. The focus point light doesn't remain lit up but it definitely allows me to move it around using the joy stick.

I could have sworn that previously I just pressed the AF Point Selection button and a single focus point would remain lit up and allow me to use the wheel to move it around. Which is what currently happens in the C1, C2 and C3 modes.

I will have another look at the settings and download a manual in PDF format as my manual is in pieces:)

i know my 5d2 allows me to set the the behavior in the menu, using either the joystick or how you describe.

Thanks Mike. I am pleased just to be able to set it now. Though would be interested to know what other 40D users get as the default behaviour.

Here is what the manual says:

is there a firmware upgrade that you need to do that may have changed functionality?

Bingo. Or is the firmware on this 40D the current behavior, and the functionality you remember the behavior of a previous firmware version?

Unfortunately does not seem to be the firmware. I have borrowed a 40D off a friend that has the same firmware 1.1.1 and my friends 40D behaves exactly as the manual details. So still searching for the reason this is not working on my 40D.

I found this using a little google-fu...

The Set-up 3 (yellow) menu includes an option to Clear All Camera Settings. This menu choice resets all settings. But it does not reset Custom Functions and Camera User Settings.

Custom Functions can be reset from the Custom Function (orange) Menu: Clear All Custom Func Settings.

If you don't reset them all, check these:

Custom Function III-04. 0= Focus points red when focus lock
1= Focus points not red unless one is manually selected

Custom Function III-03. To customize the controls used to manually choose an autofocus point.
0 = Normal (You must press AF point selection button (to right of * button), then press the multi-controller joystick in the direction you'd like.
1 = Multi-controller direct. Select AF point with multi-controller joystick alone
2 = Quick Control Dial Direct. Select the AF point using the Quick Control Dial alone.

Hey MarkB - thank you kindly sir, that did the trick!!!

I was sure I had reset this one but obviously not. Also I thought removing the batteries would cause this to reset and I left them both out all night.

Anyway very pleased to have got to the bottom of this - thanks Mark and Mike and Kirbic
