This is Memorial Day weekend in US. We honor all women and men who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces and also those who have served and still serve today.
I think that would be a good theme for a Speed Challenge. Images taken since yesterday, Friday, until this Monday.

what a nice idea for a Speed Challenge.
First, we recognize those who have given everything for their country, as you so eloquently say.
Oddly enough, your headline has a dual meaning - because here in the USA
there is another "speed challenge" on that date. It is called the Indianapolis 500 and guys & occasionally gals travel very quickly around a small track for 500 miles.
Thank you for offering this idea.

You don't have any of that? |

In Hong Kong not much...
and there is one more line "Submit anything that symbolizes Memorial Day (US Holiday) taken this past weekend." |

Yeah but none of those who served are US or can I ignore the requirement as stated in the challenge description?
"We honor all women and men who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces and also those who have served and still serve today. "
There's a war memorial here where I live for fallen British soldiers and German in WW2 but none of any US soldiers. |

So, how do other countries remember those who have died for their country? Maybe extend the Memorial Day theme internationally and show how other countries celebrate their day of remembrance. It may not be this weekend as in the US, so extend the competition to include other countries with photography within the past year with the exception of the US.
I would actually be interested in how other countries honor the veterans. |

If you imagine a small change in wording...participate in the US Memorial Day by honoring your own veterans with a photograph.
I, too, would be interested to see how other countries honor their veterans. |

In Belgium (as in more European countries) it's also on November 11th and it's called Armistice Day.

In the Netherlands remembrance of all who have been killed in WWII and in wars thereafter is on May 4th, followed by a Liberation Day on May 5th. Reason for not having a Remembrance Day in November, like many European countries, is that Holland never participated in the Great War (World War One), but kept its neutrality.
There is also a Veteran Day in June, but that one is focusing on the veterans still alive, thanking them for all they did when they served their country.

In the US we also celebrate that (i.e. there are sales) as Veterans' Day.
On the US memorial Day France holds a ceremony honoring the US pilots who helped form the Lafayette Escadrille in 1916 ...

Personally, I would consider anything that represents sacrifice for the country as meeting the challenge. Memorial Day is an American institution that grew out of our civil war. Originally it was called decoration day, and was they day that the families decorated the graves of the fallen civil war soldiers. After the World Wars it was expanded to recognize all fallen soldiers.
November 11th, which originally marked the armistice that ended World War I, was expanded here in the US after World War II to recognize all who served in our military.
In the end, sacrifice for your country is not a uniquely American trait. I would submit that any image, from any country, that exemplified love of country and sacrifice for the country would be meeting the challenge. |

The problem is that the challenge required a photo taken during the past weekend, so only the Americans can have the right shots - this is unfair IMO :(
I know that there was a day more for the rest of us but I don't think it's enough. |

"Images taken since yesterday, Friday, until this Monday."
This requirement plus the fact that is has to be about American Memorial Day makes it impossible for me and many others to enter anything at all. There has been no further clarification nor easing up of the requirements by the OP either.

Memorial Day is about honouring those who gave their lives for their country and for freedom. I think anything themed around this would meet the challenge. It doesn't have to be about Americans exclusively, or about any nationality in any event.
However, we should all know and be aware that not every challenge is going to suit us, or even be possible for us. These are challenges. Try it, or don't. There are others for you to enter if this is is objectionable or offensive. |

All fine and all agreed. One can find something to submit anywhere in the world, most probably, but not as a speed challenge. It was meant for the USA for that particular day.

True. And I'm not American and so have no "memorial day" traditions or celebrations or memorials that I can photograph either. Speed challenges are "extra" or "bonus", and often what becomes a speed challenge is like Valentine's Day or St Paddy's Day or Hallowe'en..but that doesn't mean no one can suggest another topic that is suited to a speed challenge. Sorry if non-US people felt left out -- that, I am sure, was not the intention, but rather another way to recognize a very important US holiday. |

True. I was not complaining I was just observing...
I would have liked to be back in Romania and have a portrait of my granduncle who is a WWII veteran. |
