I am beside myself - I just lost years of carefully collected and organized bookmarks!
I just spent time with my friend Janet and her new laptop. She didn't know how to bookmark something, let alone how to organize them. She asked me to show her what MY setup looks like.
I signed out of her Google account (using Chrome on a Windows 7 computer), and signed into my account. All my bookmarks popped up and I showed her how they were organized, etc.
I then logged out of my account and back into hers. My bookmarks were still there, together with her TEN (!!!).
I made double sure that were signed into HER account, and I deleted all my bookmarks to leave her only her 10.
When I got home (also Windows 7 and Chrome), I found that I had HER ten bookmarks, and all of mine are gone. I am devastated.
How is this possible when I am totally certain that I had signed out of my account and back into hers !!!!!!
I looked up how to fix this, but it seems there isn't much I can do. The one suggestion I found here didn't work, and a system restore didn't work, either. I tried importing it from elsewhere, but really had nothing TO import.
Janet and I had turned Chrome off and back on several times since then, and her computer has been turned off since then, so I'm sure there is nothing on HER machine, either.
There must be some backup on that "cloud" thing..... how on earth can I get my bookmarks back? Please help me!!!!! |

I'd certainly TRY looking for the bookmarks folder in my most recent BACKUP, which is different from a restore point. Restore points just document programs, drivers, etc, not data. Penny says if you ever imported your bookmarks into Firefox to play with it, that folder should still be intact as well. |

Well, that's a bit of a nightmare all right :-P
Since the bookmarks were being managed by the cloud, there would be nothing locally to recover, unless they were saved manually. Two possible paths:
- Have you used another browser, e.g. IE or FF, and imported your bookmarks to there? If so, they should be locally saved. Open the other browser, export them, and re-import to Chrome.
- If you have ever signed in to Chrome on another computer, they may be saved locally there. Disconnect that computer from any networks first, then open Chrome and export.

I followed the tutorial I linked to which led me to those backup files. Sadly, the date/time stamp on them were AFTER the big disaster.
I tried looking on IE, but there are practically no bookmarks on it - I basically never use it and never set it up to synchronize. Haven't used Firefox in a long time, so that won't work, either. Don't sign onto Chrome on other computers.
I just disconnected my iPad from the network and had a look there. I found some bookmarks on Safari - not sure how old and it is and it is far from complete, but at least SOME is better than nothing, right?
Now I have no clue how to get it off the iPad off Safari to back it up and save/export that file, let alone do that in any fashion that my PC will know what to do with later on. |

If Safari is like most other browsers, you should be able to export the bookmarks to an html file. Just transfer that file to the PC and you should be able to import directly.

Yes, that is what I was hoping for, but I can't see HOW to achieve that.
So once again, I'm trying to read tutorials, but they just talk about iCloud, and right now that terrifies me. |
