If you want opinions on this lens, look at dpreview. The general opinion I have heard is that Sigma made a mistake by not adding HSM to it, because it focuses slow. Much slower than the Canon 100-400 L which is just about ~$300 more. |

Review here. I'm looking into this lens myself.
Nikon mount is VR.

Looks like a decent lens, too slow for my tastes. Also, I'd expect some major image distortion with such a wide zoom range.

The reviews are quite good! The OS seems to work with Canon even though the manufactures site appears to state that it does not? |

And IMHO, Canon made a mistake by making the 100-400L push pull zoom, so I guess they're even .

A Friend of mine has this lens and I have used it several times for taking baseball snap shots. You can see some of those in my portfolio under sports.
This lens is very nice IMO. It is however quite big. The OS is very nice and helps out a lot. As soon as you push the shutter button down half way the magic starts. Everything starts to stand still through the lens. :o)
The focus is only slow when you are trying to focus from the complete opposite end of where focus is. If you are taking shots and the focus is staying somewhere close in the ballpark to where you will need it is quite good. Not fast but good.
Hope this helps!!!

I really don't understand the bias against push/pull zooms. The zoom ring has always been more awkward for me to control, especially with moving subjects.
As far as the myth that push/pull designs suck in dust, it's just that, a myth.
If I ever corral enough cash to get one or the other, I'll worry more about it then and will probably try them both out. Then buy the Canon 300mm f4 and a 1.4x TC...........

Those are really nice shots. Did you do a lot of postprocessing/sharpening or is that basically representative of the lens on its own? |

Bear in mind the 100-400L is a very old lens now.. It's been around for years.. With IS, too..
I suspect Canon will be sticking with push-pull though, because even the brand new 28-300L has it.

Well I can't afford one right now either so for now, I'm selling my non IS 75-300, buying the IS version and hope for the best!
