Hi
Has anybody got their hands on the new canon 20D?
I would love the 5 fps and 23 shots buffer and the USB 2 compatibility.
Is there much difference (in everyday situation) between 8.2 and 6.3 MegaPixels?
What is the deal with the new 9 point AF?
Canons site about this:

Terje has had a chance to play with a 20D. He posted some photos here:

I have no use for 5 fps, however it is badass and I will thus love it.
Difference between 8.2 and 6.3 megapixels? I was wondering the same thing. Here it is.
I have pre-ordered a 20D from my local camera shop and from a Canadian web site (in case the price at the local shop is a lot higher).
I don't think I need to upgrade cameras ... but I just feel like it. :)

Jacko, when do you expect to get yours? I ordered my last week, but they couldn't tell me when I would receive it. I ordered from adorama.

The 20D sounds pretty damn cool, huh! Me? I haven't gotten every drop of usefulness out of my 300D yet so I'm not itching to upgrade but I will be interested to see what you folks have to say about the 20D once you've received them. My local camera shop seems to think it'll be late September. In the meantime, they have lowered the price of the 10D. I might get one of those before stepping up to the 20D...
But, like I said, an upgrade is awhile away so we'll see. |

I've been told by two of our bigger camera stores here that Sept 20th will be when we are getting ours! :)

That sounds good! I really hope for late Sept. I probably didn't make the first shipment though, since i didn't order til last week. So, mine might be later. Not sure. I hope Adorama tells canon how many orders they have!!!

Woot woot! My camera shop confirmed today they will be charging $1999 (Canadian), same as the big web sites that accept pre-orders. They say it is set to ship soon. :)

Are you kidding me??? HOnestly, my eyes went HUGE when I read that price.
I was having hot flashes thinking I had paid too much for the 10D I just got used. But...I paid $2000 with no tax, battery grip, extra battery, 5 yr warranty. Still :-(
It's funny how we're never satisfied!!!!!!!!!! And nothing is EVER good enough. Sigh and woe! |

In regards to megapix, I crop less with the mark ii than I can on the rebel, due to crop factor. I would of imagined earlier on that the difference between the pixels would 'equal out' the difference. IMHO the rebel or 10d with the 1.6 crop and 6pix still gives a bit more leeway. Just my opinion, tho I should do some side by side tests. |

No clue what all that means, care to elaborate? Crop factor? |

The relation between the crop of your sensor in relation to a 35mm film frame (full frame, 1x crop). Your 10D sensor is much smaller, the size of an APS film frame. Its crop factor is 1.6x
You use the crop factor to calculate how your lens behaves in relation to a 35mm camera. A smaller sensor will frame a smaller, more telephoto, section.
So a 50mm lens on a 1.6x crop 10D only shows what you will see with a 80mm lens (50x1.6) on a full frame 1x crop camera.
The 1D mark 2 has a 1.3x crop factor, the size of the sensor is much closer to a 1x crop full frame sensor/film.
So 50mm becomes:
1x = 50mm
1.3x = 65mm
1.6x = 80mm
So the 1.6x camera is already cropping a bit extra compared to a 1.3x, when you use the same lens and when you are shooting from the same position.
Because the Mark2 has more mp's, you could crop a 6mp section out of the middle and that would be close to the 10D's behaviour.

I think you mean "cropping quite a bit less". =] The 1.3X crop factor 1DM2 captures a noticeably larger field of view than a 1.6X body like the 10D or DRebel.
Ellamay does a lot of birding, so the 1.3X crop factor of the 1DM2 is not a benefit to her -- she (and other wildlife photographers) is actually better off with a 1.6X body, because it makes her 400mm lens a 640mm equivalent, as opposed to "only" a 520mm lens on a 1DM2. Many wildlife photogs are gleefully looking forward to the new 20D because of the 1.6X crop and all the new bells and whistles... especially the 8.2MP, which means they will be able to crop even more -- resulting in some incredible "equivalent focal lengths" from their 400mm lenses.

I do. I read my own post before your post and saw my mistake. All that 1x 1.3x 1.6x got a bit messed up in my head. ;)
I'll change it in a moment.

I do a bit of birding myself and I really look forward to the 5 fps and 23 frames buffer.
The only question is, is it worth the upgrade from 10d or should I just get a faster CF card - mine is 45x, but now they offer 60+x
I think I'll rahter get a portable HDD+CFreader with mp3 option.

Lexar have a x80 now, although apparently the ones in the stores are the initial batch and not very good and a second edition of them is due to be released (read that off a link I found in the forums here, forget where).
I forget the name, but there seems to be a new generation of HDD CF readers appearing that are significantly faster than things like x-drives. If you can't find what let me know as I think I have a link at home to them (and there is doubtless more than one make).
