good luck in your visit to the shelter today. Even if the one you're going to look at doesn't end up being 'your dog' maybe another will pull at your heart strings while you're there

Shepherd/Lab cross sounds pretty good, hopefully the hybrid vigour will kick in. One of my favourite dogs at the moment is a big German Shepherd who likes to greet me by sticking his nose in my ear :-)

Anyway hope that dog pans out well and you get the best of both breeds, meaning a smart, fairly conformationally correct doggie that will have a good temperament, doesn't need to be walked for 10 hrs a day and will still be protective of you and your property without going too mental *protecting* you. Good luck, let us know how it goes!

Have you done your reading? The first couple of days the dog is in the house will set a pattern that can be impossible to break. They are pack animals and they will learn what behaviors they need to survive in the first couple of days when they join your pack.

When I got my rescue with a 9 month old I used the training from How to be your dog'd best friend particularly the trick where you tie his leash to your belt and have him follow you around the house doing chores or just behaving as you normally would. It gives the dog a strong message of belonging and the clue that you are the alpha of the pack and that seems to settle them in more quickly.
