I also submitted my image to the BBC In Pictures section - theme of the week was Pinhole Photography. Strange but true, it got published. :)

BTW, I also e-mailed the chap at WWPD site to see what's cooking with the group thing. I'll keep you posted.

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day 2015

Take a picture on April 26 to support this genre of photography. Check out the site for more information.

I have nothing local, but I do have a grand mighty fine pinhole. and a filthy sensor. but we should do this thing here as well.

Sarah, I loved your published pinhole image.

we should have a worldwide pinhead day, where we take pic of a pinhead. should be easy. in 2015. on earth.

You should suggest it. Nice to see your interest in pinhole too.

Oh Cool! I get to make a new lens !
If you put a pinhole lens on a bellows, it becomes a zoom pinhole lens. I found out about that a couple of years ago. Since the light is only going in straight lines that converge at the pinhole, there is no focus point.
As you move the pinhole away from the sensor, the projected image becomes larger, so the sensor "sees" a smaller portion of the overall image coming through the pinhole.

True, but know that every time you change the bellows length, you have to recalculate your exposure. This is true in general, but maybe the new digital cameras handle that.

Wait a minute, for me, that might just be a selfie... ;-)

In addition, the optimal size of the pinhole changes with focal length, so the performance at other focal lengths will be suboptimal. Heck, you'd probably lose some sharpness, LOL!

ETA: I have to get my pinhole cap out again. It's been to long.

I'm on call that day, so I have to stay close to home. hmmmm....I've got a couple of ideas up my sleeve... This could be fun.

This is a shot taken with an actual bare-bones pinhole camera, made out of an oatmeal box. This picture is one we took back in 1981 using that technique.

Oh, bummer! I never thought to make my DSLR into a pinhole.

I don't have a spare cap so can't rig one up today, but I'm totally looking into this.

Next year I can definitely participate.

Bummer for me too. I forgot all about this. Guess it slipped through the pinhole this round.

For anyone making a pinhole lens, you can use a bellows or extension tubes to make it a zoom or telephoto lens. The distance from the pinhole to the sensor will be the focal length.
Lens speed will fall off rapidly as you make it longer, by four f stops each time focal length is doubled, so framing the shot is difficult but can be done with a shade cloth. There is no focusing with pinhole lenses, so that's not an issue.

To work out shutter speed, you can shoot a couple of test shots at very high iso to save time. When you get the right exposure, you can calculate the time for a longer exposure at lower iso. The same trick works well for night shooting with regular lenses.

My attempt...

OK, my camera doesn't have a removable lens, but ... in "SuperMacro" mode it can focus on the dust on the front of the lens -- if I make a pinhole attachment for the lens hood is it possible for it to project an image onto the front of the lens such that I can capture it?
