I̢۪ve never invested before but I̢۪m wanting to buy some stock and it will probably be something short term. I̢۪ve been told etrade.com or ameritrade.com are good for short term investigating and if you do small volume investigating.
I plan on either putting in a bid tonight via some online way or 1st thing tomorrow morning.
Any advise? Bankers out there?

I do a little share dealing in the UK.. Not sure about US brokers, but are you buying common stock? (IE. NASDAQ, NYSE, etc?) If you are, I'd imagine you'll have to wait for the markets to open tomorrow morning. Also, not all brokers will open an account instantly.

My advice, go to //www.fool.com & read what they have to say. I believe the word you are looking for is investing. If you are going to day trade, you'll want to use a real time exchange service such as mastertrader or cybertrader. If you are going to hold onto the stock for longer periods, either etrade or Ameritrade is fine.
Also you want to talk with a broker not a banker.
Most of my investing is in no-load mutual funds, index funds in 'pooled' money annuities, & long term blue chip stocks.

Day trading is risky business. Don't put all your eggs into it.

My plan is to make a quick buck by buying some stock that is very cheap right now and hoping the pattern of that stock last week continues into this week, then sell. I.E. triples :)

The only problem with that is if others are doing the same thing, you may have a problem dumping it at your target price. Like StevePax said, it's risky. If you invest and then can't unload the stock and then the bottom falls out of the stock, you'll be hurting. Be careful and make sure you study the market.

Anyone heard of //harrisdirect.com/ or //sharebuilder.com/ ?
It would appear ameritrade and etrade would like me to give them $1,000 1st. Those I listed above dont have a minimum. |

sharebuilder will kill you with fees though. They charge a premium for trades, and don't offer "all" stocks. I have an account with TDWaterhouse, which is great, because I can trade online or go to a local office. |

Did you need a minimum deposite for that? Im only looking to play with $500 tops. |

1'st advice: never buy only one stock.
2 nd: Follow VIX index dacayiay[dd][pb50!b200][vc60][i]&pref=G]VIX CHART
When is low 13-15 $ ,consider selling stocks,15-17 $ avoid buying and 18 -22 good time to buy some !
Start with 1500 $ per stock for the begining.
That is all for now :-) |

Damn Pits, sounds like you got more info, hook it up! :)
Im bout to go home, ill continue my search for a decent place to buy but like I said, this is my 1st time and I dont have any plans for this to become a pattern. I just feel now would be a good time to pop my cherry in stocks. |

If you don't have an accnt already, you have to wait till you mail a check & for your deposit to clear before you can buy anything...unless you link it to your checking accnt & you can make a transfer. Even then it can take a day or so for the cash to be available for use.
I use Ameritrade. They're ok...better then when I was on the Datek side before the merge, but a few added annoying fees.

Best advice - find an online stock game. Play for a month with your 500. Then play for real. If you lose money or make less than you hope, don't start. It only gets more complicated the more you know. (I know enough to confuse you more. That's about it.) Never try to outguess the pros. You don't think the average day trader could be Jacko or Kiwi in a month, right? Think about it.

I used Ameritrade for a while, nice low fees, easy user interface, great stuff. I lost appetite after I lost a heap of money in the Nasdaq bubble.

Mad - If you think the present economy is soft, or failing, then you should short business stocks.
Do let us know how you fare with your sudden, short time investment strategy. |

What you are doing sounds more like gambling instead of investing.
If you go on like this you will loose a lot more. |
