I am off to Lakeland, Florida on Monday to attend the annual Sun 'n Fun aviation gathering. This week long event is a marvelous opportunity to photograph amazing flying machines and to try out my new Nikon AF-S 80-400 mm ED VRII lens. The event manager called me this evening to tell me that I was the lucky winner of a $1,995.00 flight in a WWII vintage P51 Mustang. So, this should be a blast. If anyone else is attending this event, please let me know.

Darn you Morgan! Not only are you going somewhere warm, but you get to take a ride in a P51?? Oh, jealousy! ;-) |

Yes, I am going on Monday, but they are forecasting 29° C to 31° C for every day that I am there and that is way to hot for me spending the whole day out on the apron at Lakeland Regional Airport.
Sadly, I am overweight for the P51 flight, so I raffled it off to one of my Buttonville Flying Club members in support of a charity event and he will take the flight for me. Yet another reason to lose weight!
My plan is to now photograph his flight and then write a story about it all for a Canadian aviation magazine. More to follow. |

Excellent. The charity bit as well. Nicely played. Besides... your 80-400mm wouldn't have fit! Priorities... |

Yes, this new AF-S 80-400mm f4.5-5.6G ED VR lens is huge and much bigger than the 12 year old predecessor that I traded in as part of the deal to buy it. It is even bigger than the new AF-S 70-200mm f2.8G VRII. It would hit the pilot in the back of the head, so it is better to use it from the ground. lol

Here are two images taken with the new Nikkor 80-400 mm lens with the ED glass and the vibration reduction second generation, the speed of the focusing is dramatically improved over the original version. I shot these images this past week while attending the 2013 Sun n Fun aviation gathering in Lakeland, Florida.
