ok i'm new to this site..ive been saving for awhile and decided it's time to spend some money on photo equipment since i've been starting to get really into photography. I want to focus on action and landscape photography, just wondering what people's opinions are, as I'm not quite sure what to get. I'm gonna be doing a lot of skateboard photography so more frames per second the better as well. Shutter lag time is also a concern for me. I've been lookin at the nikon d70, canon d20, and pentax *ist. I know I want fisheye lens and 1 or 2 very versatile lenses that would be good to begin with. I'm limited to about 1600$. Any suggestions? Are there going to be new dSLR's on the market soon? or maybe there's other ones I don't know about? |

If you want to spend $1600 then you want a camera that is reasonably cheap. Buying an expensive camera and cheap lenses does not make a lot of sense (unless you think you'll be able to spend more in subsequent months). Personally I'd only consider Nikon or Canon because they give you the largest choice of lenses.
I *think* the 20D has the fastest frames per sec (25 frames continuously at 5 fps), but it's the most expensive too. Even a few sports shooters are fairly interested in the 20D.

is the d70 considered a cheap camera? the 20d sounds great for the fps capabilities...would it be worth saving up a little longer to get the d20 and a couple lenses? i dont have the most discriminating eye yet so if i cant notice a difference i dont care a whole lot yet...i just want experience with decent equipment as bad as anything. |

The D70 seems like quite a nice camera, and performs very well for the money, from what I've read. Actual D70 owners would be able to say better than me. :-)
I guess it might be worth asking D70 owners if they miss anything the 20D would offer..
Best advice is to go to //www.dpreview.com and compare them.

My D70 was about $2300 (cdn$) to start with the kit lens and a starter kit (extra batt., 1gig card, cleaning kit, and a camera bag) I am really enjoying it. I chose it because of the options on the camera, reviews from magazines and the net, price, and it felt best when I held it in my hands.
Don't forget about the other equipment you might need to take the types of pics you like, lens, tripod, flash, extra CF card(s), and on and on. It all adds up really quick. I think I have spent about the same on other equipment as I have my original purchase.
Search the forum for other threads like yours. They're really helpful too.

I agree.
Acquiring a DSLR with a basic set of good lenses, a sturdier tripod with a larger head to support the increased weight, remote, a few (odd-sized filters)., a grip for dual batteries, larger CF cards, a lil backpack or a bag. so you can actually transport equipment... has set me back about CDN $ 7.500... so far.
Add the cost of the little Sony F717 plus accessories I cannot live without as quick walk-around cam, we're at CDN $ 9.500... so far.
Something to consider.

I went with a D70, a 28-200 f4.5 lens, 2 GB microdrive, extra battery and a couple other tidbits - was about 1600 at the end, maybe a bit more. You don't have to get everything all at once! If I could go back in time I would probably have gone with the kit lens - the extra telephoto is nice, but I miss the wider angle and have been in situations where a faster lens would be nice.
Since my initial outlay I've purchased an SB800 speedlight and am currently saving up for a wide-angle lens.
I strongly suggest going to a camera store and trying some out - I was faced with the choice of a D70 or the Canon Digital rebel. On paper it was hard to decide, but once I tried them out at the store I fell in love with the feel of the D70 and especially the speed. |

E-1 is a great camera and you may want to look at it since you have an Olympus already. I know other here will try to talk you out of it because most use Canon or Nikon here but never the less the E-1 can produce great images with more dynamic range then the 10D or new 20D for that matter. Just take a look here for more info:

Of course it can. All the new DSLR's can. 10D, Digital Rebel, E-1 are all fine cameras but remember it is not the camera but the eye behind it.

Remember, the 10D has gone down in price, and it's an excellent camera! You could buy that, and buy one good lens a year til you are satisfied... :)

The advice you have recieved is good, go look and try different cameras and find one that fits you. Bear in mind also, that current Canons are not true 35mm sensor, so the field of view crop is 1.6x, therefore a 28mm lens on a 35mm will be 44.8mm on Digital Canon. This is great on telephotos etc as you get greater focal length. The price of a wide will be a lot higher for the Digital Canon, you will need 15mm lens to achieve approx 28mm.

It doesn't have interchangeable lenses but a very versatile 8 MegaPixal 7x optical zoom, The Minolta Dimage A2. It's antishake technology would be an asset for hand-held sports photography. I have had the Dimage 7i for over 2 years and absolutely love it. If the new Maxxum digital SLR is too expensive for me, I'm going to trade up to the A2.
