Woo hoo! Leaving after work today to drive to Seattle to drop the dog off with my parents and then it's an early flight Saturday headed for Vegas and Zion. Looks like good weather and I'm totally excited to get out hiking and doing some photography with the family and a good friend from residency (who bought himself a 5D3...will be fun to compare to the 5D2).

Anybody else planning on being there over spring break?

Exactly! :) I'm excited about it too. Planning on visiting a nearby cemetery in Grafton for some milky way shots. I wish I had discovered "EL-wire" more than a few days ago so I could bring some down for a little painting with light.

Would be happy to Neil! Send me a PM if I forget. Should be back in town on the 1st of April.

I think the EL-Wire may deserve it's own thread. I saw a blog on it and suddenly I'm intrigued.

Without the "National Park" in the thread title I thought you were headed for the literal Zion ... :-(

Obama's won't be there long ... it's pretty safe for tourists -- almost every bus has a couple of teenagers with Uzi's riding along ...

However, if you want a real adventure that'll get your pulse up to 180, you can always see if you can take the walk through Hezekiah's Tunnel ... ;-)

This is the week when millions hope "Next year in Jerusalem" ...

Jason, Zion 1/2 marathon is this Saturday March 23, I would avoid the area this weekend.
My favorite Hike is Emerald Pools entrance across from Zion lodge. Go early I have often seen deer before the crowds show up.Check to see if the mandatory buss service is needed, I think it starts March 23, It's free the buses are frequent and comfortable.
You might want to consider Snow Canyon state park in St. George.
I could also possibly show you A large grouping of Anasazi petroglyphs also in St.George.
I live in Hurricane UT so you will be driving threw our little town, if I can provide any assistance let me know..

Thanks for the info! We will be staying in Springdale. Glad the run is on Saturday as we're only getting in that day. I'll check out the details of the run. Thanks for the offer for personal assitance. I will keep it in mind!

PS, as far as Grafton, been there done that, it was anticlimactic at best, your photo shows 90% of the cemetery. Of the old buildings that are there, only 2 are not on private property. If you do go, know the road to get there is not marked and difficult to see.

Also while driving SR-9 threw the Hurricane area drive the speed limit, the police around here are notorious for handing out souvenirs you do not wish for..

Thanks. I wasn't expecting too much from Grafton, but might still make for a good milky way shot. The kids will just get goosebumps from it being a "ghost town". Caden has already declared "no thanks!" to the idea of a cemetery near a ghost town at night. :)
