Was taking pics of my favourite model chasing a pinecone and this little sparrow perched on the brick ledge nearby. Cloned out a blade of grass.......ok or not?
thanks

First of all, I try not think on weekends. Enough of that during the rest of the week.
Second, your image is pretty good, but you can see that the shot was taken at the high end of the telephoto range, causing loss of detail. As a rule of thumb, I try to never push the zoom to its max for any shot. I'd rather lose a bit of magnification while conserving image sharpness.

i think the distance to subject has more to do with detail loss than the focal length. camera shake, mis-focus...
i use my 75-300mm @ 300mm all the time for close'ish subjects, and don't find any problems with lost details - and i have a cheap lense to boot. you're better of shooting at certain apertures to avoid issues with the lense. ie: not wide open, not fully closed.
i think the detail here could have been saved with a tripod.

Good point!.....trouble is I worked this morning so the brain's just starting to shut down now!
Thanks for that......didn't realise you would't get the same level of sharpness when you were using the lens fully extended, thought that was only with optical/digital zoom.

it depends on the quality of the lense. and the aperture used.
the kits lense 18-55mm efs - is soft at any aperture outside the f:7-11 range.
EDIT: although when used like a macro lense i have had good luck at f:5.6 - 6.3. outside of that i try to shoot at f:8 or 11

Camera shake at 1/1000 sec? You must drink too much... just kidding. But I do agree with your other points, especially the point about shooting with wide opened or nearly closed.

was using 90-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM lens. Tripod aside, what settings would have worked better. Focus doesn't look too bad to me, but I did leave my glasses at work today......is it the feathers on his chest that are oof?

Looking at the bird's chest it looks windy. Am I right? That would explain the shake problem at 1/1000th with the feathers moving and hand shake. On the other hand the bird looks cold on a cold surface so IMO you have captured a bird in a NZ winter quite well. I quite like the picture as it stands.

LOL, in all this I forgot ...the cloning! Cloned a piece of grass out of the shot....only other time I've tried this was on a miniscule spot of gunge on the glass of a fish tank shot. The grass was way bigger. Used the cloning tool then the healing brush.
thanks again for all the help and advice, it's really appreciated :)

It looks a bit dark to me. I think adjusting Shadow/Highlights would do bring out the detail.
edit: here's a quick try (hope you don't mind)

Don't mind in the slightest xion, it's great to see how other people would edit a photo. One day it would be fascinating to put up one photo and get everyone to edit it and post their final result together with what they did. |

Well, at least I'm not the only person to think it was a little dark (was blaming my monitor again). Nice shot Sue :) Have you read this thread about the virtual photographer plugin? more to learn I know but played with the pic for about 60 secs with it and got this result then cropped and enlarged.
I like your thinking about posting 1 image and seeing how many editing variations we'd get - here's your second...
needs some work but you get the idea :)
Boozon, are you one of those police profilers, the sort that is given an item of clothing and creates the person that was wearing it and describes their life? (I think Sue is in springtime now tho)

LOL... No not a police profiler. I can see what you mean though. BTW it is still winter in NZ :)
