Hello friends!

I am thinking im buyng a beauty dish. Specially to use on location doe to easy of transportation/space usage.

I've done some researsh and it seems that fashion photogs prefer the Mola modifiers/beauty dishes.

They are quite pricey and hard to find in europe, but if they are worth it I might try to get one. The more accessible one is the Mola Demi 22', but I feel this might be a bit small, altough a very portable one.

I saw the Walimex Pro 28' (70cm) white beauty dish for a very decent price and they are reasonably well build so this might be a good cheaper option.

Any advide on this, or would you go for another modifier?

I already have a 120cm Octabox, 90cm Octabox, 120x80cm softbox and a 120x30cm stripbox.

And how about the beam of light that beauty dishes give? I have heard that they have an optimal usage range. I now my studio lights well, but this one is new to me. Any advice/info is welcome.

Sorry -- I have absolutely no advice to give you because I have such a dearth of knowledge in this area. But if you have a soft box and an octobox, what else would you get before a beauty dish? (see my lack of knowledge? :)

The only thing I think I can add is that beauty dishes aren't for everyone. I've read that it's a particular light that that's lovely on lovely people, but terror on us normal folk... :D

You might check the strobist website. He's written several posts on beauty dishes.

If you don't have one already I would get a good boom arm. I have a 22" beauty dish and really do like it but it is not much more portable then my collapsible boxes but it is better in a breeze. To make the best of the dish you really do want to have it very close to your subject if it is being used as a main light. Do you prefer softer light or more dramatic punchier light?

I have a 22" beauty dish and I adore it. I would NOT categorize it as more portable as it cannot be folded up, and it does take up a good amount of space. The grid is also quite delicate. So I would not say it is more convenient to take to locations, although I do take it everywhere. It is most definitely easier to set up than a soft box...

Regarding the quality of light, it is truly a matter of personal taste. I use it with both a grid (very focused beam) and a shower cap (softer, brighter, wider beam). Placement is very important when using the grid, but with the shower cap, you can have a nice balance of wide but somewhat focused. I think of it as something of a spotlight, that is how definite the edges can be. I tend to prefer more dramatic lighting, and I think that is the main difference between a beauty dish and a soft box.
