What do you all think of organizing online camera classes for individual cameras? For instance, users of the "X" camera could get together at a certain time of evening and talk for an hour about a pre-determined feature of their camera, learning how to use it, what it's for, what it helps with, etc. Then everyone takes a few moments to try some shots out and post them and at the end of the hour, everyone can chat with each other about what might have gone right or wrong?
To do this, we'd have to either find a public chat room, post class times on this forum like "Camera Class - Canon 10D: Using AE Lock" with the message being "//www... and the date and time to meet. or "Camera Class - Pentax Optio S: Using White Balance" with the message being something like that above (link to the chat room, date & time).
Of course, someone would have to volunteer from each camera group to pick the dates & times, and post the link. And be responsible for saving a copy of the entire chat conversation for republishing for users who couldn't make it to class that day...
The reason I am suggesting something like this is because not all cameras have "Magic Lantern Guides" and even so, they don't teach you everything about photography, even based on your camera.
If there are already classes out there, I apologize. I just know that i don't know nearly half of what my 10D can do, and i just ordered a 20D. I really want to know EVERY single thing about my camera, it's functions, what everything means when I choose it, and how to set CF and why to set things?
I don't think i am alone here. The thing is, as much as I read and read... I never find what i am looking for. I don't have classes in my area that I have found online or at local shops, though you'd think I would find something in Glendale, CA!
So, does anybody else think this is a good idea? We could all nominate organizers and ask them if they'll do it! We do need someone, who's tech savvy, to recommend a free chat board we could use too!
Okay, those are my thoughts. I am not sure if this will go anywhere, but i wanted to put it out there...

Sounds like a pretty good idea. It'd be useful to get some tips and tricks that are not included in the manual and maybe get a little refresher on areas I may have skimmed through. I'd definetly participate in something like this. |

Even if not everyone does it, it'd still be nice for those of us who want to sit here with our cameras on our desks, talking to each other, helping each other, can get together at a specified time and online place. Do you know of any chat sites that have free chat?

IRC is probably your best bet, using a smaller IRC server that wouldn't be so crowded or prone to op-attacks. That way, people could use it with a huge variety of IRC programs such as mIRC, Ircle, Xircon, BitchX, et al. |

What an excellant idea. My camera came with a 179 page manual which I always carry with me when in serious photography mode but most of what I have learned to do with it, I have got from other sources like internet reviews and talking to other people. Feed back is always better than reading a manual :) |

Well, even if we don't have an instructor... when you put a bunch of users together using the same camera, they are bound to have had different experiences and knowledge of the camera, and we can all share our knowledge in a systemized format. We can follow our manuals each week doing another lesson. We can elaborate on the chapter/section with our experience and knowledge in that particular field (ie. focus, white balance, functions (custom), modes, etc).
I downloaded an IRC client. I am going to mess with that this week and see if I can come up with an easy way to talk. Yahoo Instant Messenger also has a chat client, AND you can use a microphone, even with dial-up!
So, what we might want to do is send this thread to everyone with the same camera in a PM or something... and see if we can get an interested group together online!
What do you think?
