I am going away in a few eeks to the wonderful and wet British coast.
Unbeknown to my girlfriend, I plan on spending a lot of time taking photographs, and desperately want to get some nice landscapes and seascapes. I have only ever shot landscapes properly once (in wales), and never before attempted more than snapshot at seascapes.
One of the things I need is a natural density filter. I like the Cokin ones because apparently I can adjust them up and down to suit the horizon - where as with the standard filters it fades at half way so your ratio of land and sky must be 50-50.
Is this correct? Which is the best option? I went to a camera shop today but there are about a squillion diofferent filters for the Cokin range, and even 3 different cokin holders to choose from (Z series?)
Anyone have any advice with ND filters - Cokin preferably or otherwise if you think they are crap,.

personally I like cokin "P" holder cuz they are cheap, but
keep in mind they are cheap! I like using High-tech filters
for the cokin "P", quality seems to be a bit better.
The graduated filters are the ones that will allow you to adjust
the filter as they are half clear and half nd. make sure you
get a soft and a hard transition. The hard will work better for
seascapes, and the soft will work better for pics where the
horizon line is a bit more hilly. |

Hey Jon,
What you are looking for is called a split neutral density filters or a gradual neutral density filter. I use Cokin and I have a +1, +2, and a +3. You will need an adapter ring for each lens (unless they take the same sized filters) and a Mount that actually holds the filters.

Don't forget: you need adapter rings for your lenses (same as your filter size)

I want a P series I think - as I will be using it on a 24mm lens with 72mm thread?
Also the type I wil get is a 0.6 (+2 stops?) grad ND soft transition.
But on my list it doesn't have a cokin filter by that option. They do have grey grads is taht the same?

grey graduals is what you want.
