Rembrandt Lighting
Advanced Editing
Rembrandt lighting is a lighting technique that is used in portrait photography. It is achieved by using one light and a reflector or two lights. One side of the face is lit well from the main light source while the other side of the face uses the interaction of shadows and light to create a triangle or diamond shape of light under the eye. More information on Rembrandt Lighting can be found here |

I'm all for a challenge that relates to photography basics than some arbitrary topic. |

seems like this would cause too many similar entries... but sure, why not. |

I would learn something from this. Sounds good to me. |

More similar entries than a challenge that requires a specific subject, like fans, buttons or suitcases?
Challenges that were about good execution of photography fundamentals are what got me interested in the site.

...I shall assume that Mike_311 is not familiar with the Duck Challenge from a few years back... the subject was the same, but surprisingly the entries differed greatly.

.... whereas for this, the subject is the same (even if wouldn't really HAVE to be a portrait, that's what they'll all be) PLUS there are very tight restrictions on how it is to be presented.
Not complaining, I think it is a great learning experience, just saying that this would certainly be more restricting than other challenges. |

Rembrandt Lighting reminded me of a thread of years back.
the author suggested 'borrowing' one of the Old Master paintings
and using it via Match Colors to create your own masterpiece
superimposing those colors on your own.
I experimented with the idea for a long time with some fascination
(I usually just picked colors from images of mine that I liked.)
Just now I 'borrowed' a Rembrandt image for a few minutes and was amazed
with the result...and then destroyed it.
Wish I could find the original thread, but that kind of search
is not my long suit.

this would be great. Would also love to see a plain male/female portrait challenge again. Advanced only. |

Short suits are better anyway. |

Not Rembrandt lighting. Still a very good example of what Alice was talking about, and I just love the "feel" of this.

You know, Rembrandt Lighting, or Van Gogh Emulation - either of these would be a great
way to build up to a truly knowledgeable "Fine Arts" challenge one of these days. |

Because I'm a stubborn old lady, I actually eventually did find the link for the thread:
It is here.
