I've become more and more interested in portraiture, and love messing around in photoshop with images and touching up photos ala fashion magazines etc. Very processed, over the top makeup and so forth.

My question is, are we allowed to add makeup to an image under the Advanced rule set? I believe this is adding an element to the image, so probably illegal, but wanted to confirm.

Depends on the makeup. For example, "lipstick" following exactly the contours of the model's mouth would be legal, but creating a new shape of lips with color would not be. However, since a certain amount of shape-nudging with photoshop tools has been allowed, I'd suppose you could plump the lips up a bit that way then color them.

From what you're saying, you're talking about fairly extreme "makeup", adding stuff basically, and that would be a no-go most likely.

Robert, thanks for the help. I'm thinking of adding makeup where there wasn't in the original. Either lipstick or nice garish eye shadow etc. Not changing shapes, but changing and adding color.

If you create a shape with color, you are treading on thin ice. I can imagine that creating a very broadly feathered blush on cheeks might be OK, but creating a very distinct shape of well-defined eye shadow would, I think, be an instant DQ.

The infamous lipstick DQ comes to mind.

yes the slightest "new" shape will be a dq, the infamous lipstick dq indeed.

as for eye makeup i think you're on even thinner ice as there won't be any "ines" to fill, you'd be creating new shapes.

eta: take a look here as well

two things dpc frowns upon, good portraits and over the top processing.

You're definitely skating on thin ice with this idea. If it's a matter of slightly enhancing coloration of skin tone, or lip tone, then it's probably not in danger of being disqualified under Advanced rules.

Here's what to ask yourself... when looking at your before/after results, would you describe the "after" shot differently than the "before" one? In other words, would your original description be a "portrait of a woman," and your later description, "a woman with make-up?" If it changes the description of the shot, it's probably going to be a DQ.

I photograph a woman with red lipstick. In PS, with advanced editing, I select the lips and change the color to green.

The typical viewer's description will change (woman with green lips), but the editing is legal.

So bear this in mind; color shifts within already-defined spaces or shapes are always legal, as far as I know. It's when you create new features that you run into trouble. Of course, I'm not SC...
