This challenge is, I think, one of the best overall I've ever seen on dpc. No real barker images in the bunch. Lots of entries making great use of the expert rule set. Some very creative takes on the subject. Very well done.

If anyone who entered did not get a comment from me, please let me (and the site council) know.

...and considering that there are but 144,000 total spots available in heaven, and the earth is only 6000 years, that would mean an average of 24 souls per year were granted access to Heaven since the dawn of time.

When we consider that the Catholic church already has something like 8,000 saints, I don't like the chance that the rest of the population has of getting in.

It is a good story though. :O)

Ray

The 144,000 is the number of the children of Jacob (Israel) who are marked to protect them from the final events - 12,000 from each of the 12 tribes. Almost immediately following, Revelations records an innumerable crowd, also in white robes - and these are just the martyrs from the Great Tribulation. The invitation is open to everyone who believes, and not just an elite 144,000.

Thanks, David, for the comment. It was a good constructive critique. You are the only one who analyzed the image correctly. Good job!

I have an idea about which one is yours and IMO it wouldn't deserve a 5.48... did I comment on yours (I've done several comments, that's why I can ask)

...believes in what? Are you suggesting that all the good people who led exemplary lives but under different beliefs are condemned to eternal damnation simply because they were (not of their choosing) brought up to believe something other than Christian dogma.

actually I meant that many parts of the bible stimulate creative imagination. or maybe I shouldn't say "creative" in this context. in any case, meditating on passages in religious texts is recommended in many if not all religious traditions. the passages are not there to support doctrine or argument but to speak to the inner person via her imagination. the parables in the new testament are recommended for this, but passages in the dhammapada work as well.

this is what teaching is. not promulgation but awakening. I can't believe I am saying this, it seems so self evident. I just thought kikitchen's phrasing was fortuitous in spite of himself.

In Paul's letter to the Romans 2:6-15, he talks about people who have not heard the law, and he is very clear that those who, by persistence in doing good, seek glory, honor, and immortality will be given everlasting life. And also, those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, will experience wrath and anger. Righteousness is determined not by knowing the Jewish law (Christian dogma), but by behavior that conforms to the law's requirements.
I also find verses 17 through the end of chapter 2 interesting, especially with the understanding that Paul was a disciple of one of the most respected Jewish teachers of his lifetime, a member of the Pharisees, and an up-and-coming leader of that sect. Given that he was once one of their in-crowd, his criticism must have been scathing.

My score has settled I believe. Started at a 5 went to 7.5 at it's highest, was at 6.5 for the longest time but it has now sank to a low 6.

I expect I lost some votes due to the modern interpretation of the verse. which honestly is a shame since the verse in question was a metaphor anyways. I had hoped this would be a new personal best but it was not in the cards. :)

Still it's my first challenge in 4 years so it's good that I finally entered something.

But regardless.. Gyaban's image is un-freaking believable. So good.
