All primary modern browsers have spell check. Most have detailed grammar checking.
Do I have much hope the people who need the most help will read this? No!
I do understand English is not the first, nor second, language of some. I would think that those individuals would be first in line to use the spelling and grammar checking assists. There exists autocorrect, too. Sometimes that causes embarrassing problems, but it can be helpful some of the time.
In this age of texting and Internet communication, does the use of correct grammar, spelling and punctuation matter? I don't know anymore. I don't think some younger people care if they are perceived as illiterate.
After all, it's a Mad Max world. Maybe increasingly so at DPC. |

Though t's convenient to level the charge at "kids these days," I know just as many "older people" who care little about such things, too. While it's always been common practice to lament the descent of humanity into the pits of savagery, let's just ensure those who know not the homophones of your have an appearance in the Thunderdome reserved. Or at least American Gladiators or something.

I actually considered where I wanted to take that and thought yore was a bit too groanworthy. I also initially put homonym but thought that was a bit subtle. |

I agree; I find it so irritating when I keep see mispellings of words as simple as colour, grey, centre, aeroplane, offence, quaralling, demagogue, arse amongst many, many others ;0P |

I recognize and am tolerant of all, except I might quarrel with one, as it has a French derivation. |

Reminds me of a sign I saw online once.
It drives me batty when my browser wants to correct humour, neighbour, colour, and various other words with "our" in them, especially since I have everything set to proper English, instead of American. |

I don't mind so much when the spelling/grammar mistakes are genuine mistakes, when people are making an effort to use the correct words correctly.
What gets me is the usage of txt talk online. I can understand the need for brevity when using a phone number pad. But seriously, when you've got a full QWERTY keyboard do you really need to abbreviate everything to that ridiculous txt language? |

Bring it on! The antiquated (er...traditional) English language and spelling is long past due for an update. After all, the purpose of language is the transfer of common meaning between persons. "u r" is just as understandable as "you are" for most English speakers. Strict spelling and grammar rules were needed when distance and time were significant limitations to communication, but txt & messaging are new in that they allow written communication virtually instantaneously around the entire world - thus, new conventions and their meaning are rapidly transferred to the entire community, reducing the practical need for the strict rules.
That being said, folks who are unplugged have a very difficult time coming up to speed when they encounter the new conventions for the first time. It makes them feel stupid or out of it, and so they don't like it.
Where I have trouble is in "news" reporting, official company documents, letters from Human Resources, etc. where they misuse "your" and "you're" or "there" and "their" or use bad or confusing grammar. These are sources that depend on clear, precise communication, and using similar words that convey different meaning is rather counter-productive, IMNSHO.

I'm one of those older folks who has a hard time with the texting. I use talk to text, so it still spells everything out in complete sentences with punctuation. I received this text from my aunt on Christmas...
hel gm i want 2 wish u n ur fam a merr xmas. Take care lu.
I was so confused. I had to call and ask what it meant. My sister's name is Luci, so I thought she sent it to the wrong person at first. |

I had to look up gm, so guess where that puts me on the txt understanding scale? This is a good example of NOT communicating. |
