Well, hell! I give up. This site has gone to the dogs. |
Sorry, Richard. Just reacting to the sadness of this situation. I thought this site was about photography, not silly, juvenile tricks. |
It's okay, Margaret. I've asked for moderators to help with the punks who can't read, write nor understand a simple challenge description. Website disruption and taunting are violations of forum rules. No help from the direction of SC moderators, yet. |
I tried before, too. SC seems to like these kinds of posts so no change is likely. It is a wasted effort, same as hoping that the "Best of 2011" news will finally get updated. |

Technically, Richard... the flatulence angle (albeit gross) is perfectly within the challenge description. It's not really debatable. The source of the wind, be it from the clouds, a box fan, or someone's butt is still the invisible movement of air. The other definitions referred to were cited: "winding a watch" and I would add "being long winded" or "being winded" after running to the no-no list.
I used the love the AC units they sold at Sears when I was a kid because they attached streamers to them to demonstrate the wind. A shot of something like that is 100% in the challenge theme.
Regardless whether you agree, the fact remains that the discussion of the theme is not and has never been limited to what is on topic. These threads meander all the time and I would be shocked (and appalled) if the SC did anything to censor the discussion. They aren't disrupting the site or taunting (not any more than you are by calling them out for their views). |

its funny mnet and hahn seeking sanction on ppl not subscribed to their view, what happened to free speech
just because he doesn't agree with you doesn't mean you can call on the site council to sanction him, or the reverse would apply and venser and nygold could do the same to you,
just ignore him.... |

I guess times have changed since the last time we had a Wind challenge. People could use those previous challenge entries as precedent setting. I don't think I saw any hairy asses, like Venser, in those entries. But, I could be wrong. I'm pretty sure we can't count on the SC to help keep the site civil. It's so sad the site has sunk to these levels of disrespect and incivility.
Interpreting the challenge description to be something other than the breeze that blows is just not right. But, you know what?... things have really declined at DPC, so this is right in line with the trends. It's sort of like the post apocalyptic Mad Max movies. Society has broken down to total chaos and there's no hope to regain civilization. |

Decline has been documented. All is left is a few clowns and die hard addicts. |

i thought this site was supposed to have an element of artistic/creative interpretation of the challenge descriptions?
frankly, if you feel an interpretation of the challenge isn't being followed to YOUR liking, well that's what your vote is for, isn't it?
i for one will be disppointed if venser doesn't follow through with his threat promise.

I rarely read forum posts or add to them.....but I would like to get more involved with people who can help me learn things about using my camera and inspire me. I liken the crudity here to being like living in Manhattan.....or any other large city.......which I did........while on a crowded subway or bus, one see, hears and smells many things......I think people's expressions ALWAYS give us a clue as to their true nature. Best to ignore.... :-) Be selective! I WANT to enjoy D>P>C> MORE!!!!! and I notice more people I haven't seen before. I too would like to comment on each photo with a constructive positive comment. That's what I think MORE people should do!!!!
I support encouragement and sharing the positive.....
On to wind.
Wind may be invisible but coupled with natural elements.....sand....water....grasses etc... wind can create beautiful patterns. I am leaning toward the artistic in this challenge.....I am ready to use more tools available for the digital processing.....
I look forward to reading your comments, hahn23! |

When I saw Wind as the topic I first thought of something outdoors. At no point did farts enter my mind until I read this thread. |

Self-immolation images would score better in the monthly free study. Or, maybe better to keep it for the annual Best of... challenge, because it's sort of final. Really does fit with the post apocalyptic rampage Venser and his buddies are promulgating. I'll give you credit for egging him on! +10 |

Fart lighting is like noodling for catfish...it seems crazy until you try it...then it's just funny. It's a far cry from self immolation, I doubt that monk was lighting his fart when he burst into flames.
As to Venser going on a post-apocalyptic rampage, given his stance on guns, that's just funny. He's more likely to start a snowball fight. |

I'm not sure you give Venser enough credit for his constitution. From what I've observed, he is a prime candidate for spontaneous human combustion. Doesn't really require a source of ignition. It just happens. |

How about a compromise. If Venser pisses into the wind will you accept that as valid? |

You're always advocating voters are too narrow minded, I just wanted to expand this theme a little so we don't see infinite bent trees and waves.

Recommend you suggest a challenge topic that meets your fantasies. |

I recommend you stop discussing the challenge so much as you risk, as your intention appears to be, affecting the entries and the voting on the challenge, leave it up to the entrants to decide what to enter.

My intention in starting this thread was to help awareness and encourage members to enter the challenge. Venser's ideas are not appropriate. He's self-centered... a megalomaniac. He's entitled to do whatever he wants, but as you see, he's making sure everyone knows what he's going to do.
What's important is the challenge description, which states, "This challenge is specifically intended to be about "wind" like a breeze that blows, not about alternate meanings of wind like "wind the clock" or anything else. Your task is to try to capture this invisible but always-present phenomenon."
Alternate meanings of wind are not welcome, nor appreciated. The challenge description is mighty wide, as it stands. Just review the wide range of interpretations in Wind I or II. Venser is simply trying to be a disruption and an annoyance. In that regard, he's doing a good job. Since the SC is not helping to moderate the forums, I'll fight a lot harder against his subversive personality. So, Giles, advise your friend to cool it. |

That will be up to the voters. Some I am sure will find the rude and irreverent a nice diversion, some will hate them. However attempting to limit what is a proper entry in the forum is always a losing battle.
"Never mud wrestle a pig. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it."
I do not mean to cast either side of this argument as the pig here, but I find the argument is throwing more heat than light.

The irony is you're always complaining about voters not expanding their horizons when it comes to your shoehorns. I'm proposing a valid entry into a wind challenge and you're trying to darndest to stop it from being a valid entry. Please, pretty please, at least acknowledge the irony in this.
Originally posted by hahn23: Since the SC is not helping to moderate the forums, I'll fight a lot harder against his subversive personality. | As they shouldn't in this case. We always have these pre challenge threads discussing interpretations of the challenge. The only difference with this one is you don't like my suggestion. That's it.
Like BrennanOB mentions, the voters will ultimately decide if it meets the description.

I didn't write the challenge description. But, I do see that it was written to try to avoid alternate meanings of "wind". So much so, that it specifically says what is included ( "wind" like a breeze that blows) and what is not (not about alternate meanings). This is very clear.
I do agree with you that some will ignore the challenge description. And, the voters can vote as they wish. It's too bad Venser felt he had to telegraph his move. |
