I've been shooting with my Rebel XSI for a few years now. I love it and have gotten a lot of use out of it, but I have been thinking about buying a 5d classic. I shoot a lot of concerts and it would be nice to get a little more out of my 50 1.4 because even though I love that lens it tends to feel just a little tight for me. Also I have been moving into more portrait work and It seems to me the full frame would be nice for that, even If it means I also end up buying the 85mm. SO. Thoughts? I found a 5d in good used condition for $600, should I pull the trigger and try and make half back selling my xsi? Or should I just buy more glass and wait til I can buy something more current? |

I'm shooting a crop sensor, so I really don't have info for you -- but I'll bump it for the full frame experts. :) |

Well, your rebel is not outdated, but I think you would really enjoy the 5D for portraiture. You certainly might find that a longer lens would be desirable though. For concert work, the 5D will be quite sufficient. Hec, in 2005 when it was released, it was pretty much the king of low light. Compared to the 6D or 5DIII however, well, it's no contest. Still, a good used 5D represents a tremendous value. $600 is a very fair price. If you buy it, and later decide you want to upgrade to something more current, you won't lose a lot.
ETA: the biggest change is no on-board flash... but IMO that's not really a disadvantage ;-)

I'm 90% of the way to trading my T2i for a 5D. The only thing holding me back is I lose the "reach" of the crop sensors with tele lenses. |

I'm starting to sound like a broken record withthis but I see no reason to buy a 5D with the way prices have come down on the 5D Mark 2 |

While it is getting cheaper it may still be beyond the budget of many. The OP said he had found a 5D for $600. I suspect the 5D Mark II is not getting very close to that any time soon. |

I am a current XSI user. I am finding I am hitting the limitation wall in what I can do with it. I am running into situations where I could really use the extra dimensions of a full frame. Also, I am not liking the lack of detail I am getting with the ef-s lenses in certain situations. And heck, I have no idea how you are shooting concerts with it. It is not very good in low light at all. I can't imagine how you are getting the needed shutter speed to not have any motion blur in such a dark venue. I have the 50 f1.8 and it's very soft at f1.8 so even if I can get a good shutter speed, I am almost always OOF due to the limited length of the DOF at the aperture. I am waiting to move up to full frame using the 6D. I think the 5D would be a good choice too, especially at that price.

$500 vs $1200 is a big difference. Sure, I can buy a Mark ii, but then I'll no glass to go with it. Buy a 5Dc and I can add a 17-40 or a 24-105 for the same price of the II. |
