Tried to view a file I just recorded with my 5DMK2 and either it plays with jittery garbled video or completely crashes the pc. Very strange. About to try installing a codec pack. Also happens with files I've viewed previously.

Video can be pretty frustrating. I love playing with it, but know very little, which aggravates the situation. Has video from the 5DMK2 behaved for your in the past, or is this new hardware to make your video? Have you changed the software? There are SO many codecs out there, some codecs with the same name are even actually different ! >:-(

what OS and what are you using to play it? i haven't shot video yet so im not sure what format the 5d2 records into. i havent really played with video in a while. i do run a mediapc for home theater so i have some experience with codecs, but i havent messed with them lately since its been working fine for a while now.

if you are using win7, it should have all the codecs you need built in, the only thing it doesn't have is a media splitter for viewing .mkv, but i doubt thats the container file for the 5d2. if you hanve vista or win xp you will need extra codecs. try playing it in VLC.

if you are getting a choppy video its most likely a video card or processor issue. hd video isn't all that media intensive, but if you have older than a i processor or equivalent you have to have a certain motherboard chipset with on board video unless you have a dedicated video card that can handle hd video.

Windows 7 64 bit

Yeah really weird, files I've viewed before not working also. The only change I can think of is I added a wireless nic but I'm hard pressed to see how that would cause this.....

I work in IT as an engineer.

Recently we had Blue screens everytime people were viewing youtube videos.

As it turned out... both NIC drivers needed to be updated. So you should upgrade both your wired and wireless drivers.

Seriously try it. See what happens.

I ended up fixing the issues in my company by upgrading the drivers on the network side.

Just sounds like your comp / graphics card isn't upto dealing with the size of the hd video from the 5d mkii it can't stream it fast enough.

Oh the warm glow of mac ownership, drivers?? Blue screens?? What are these things??

Ps don't worry I know, the number of windows laptops I've fixed over the years even when at SUN

But when a computer has worked a lot, especially with Windows systems, it can happen.

Cameras video files are HEAVY.

there may be something to it, it just dawned on me i did change video cards. i just never considered it because i went from on board video to an actual video card so if anything, you would think it would perform better.....have to check it out when I get home

What do you use to see the video files?

basic troubleshooting to try:
go back to onboard video: does it still happen?
disable onboard video in bios AND use agp/pci-e card with Latest drivers: does it still happen.
check forums online for video card - do others have this issue?
If this is a recently purchased card, consider returning as it may be as damaged as you are ;p

hey, if windows is crashing, it should generate a report as to why - esp if its a hardware error. If you look at the logs, this may shine some light.

I was always anti-Mac, until I started taking an interest in video editing. My next laptop will probably be a Mac.

I have nothing against them, I just am afraid of becoming a "mac person" and then I would have to shoot myself

if you pull a log report and don't know what to make of it, email it over to me: MyUsernameFromDPChallenge (@) gmail (dot) com

it's smart to never actually type your email address into a forum as there are companies out there who look for that sort of thing to add your name to lists that they sell off to "advertising companies".
