I have an am continuing to do a themed project for myself. I have a small number of images and will be shooting more. The plan is to eventually put together a coffee table book and possibly offer it for sale (if someone even wanted to buy it). I'm going to keep shooting as long as my heart is in it, but I'm just wondering at what point I have enough images to put the book together.

What is the ideal quantity, or number of pages a book should have.

Depends on how you print it. Blurb has templates, and there is a minimum amount of pages required to constitute a "book", which I think is 20 pages. If you're planning on writing about each image, you can get away with 10 images with the facing page for type. If you want to do a calendar, you can get away with just 12. If you're thinking coffee table book, you're looking at a minimum of 35-50. So the answer is, it depends.

FYI, "collections" generally have a minimum of 6 images, and more often, 10.

i was think about writing for image, either that or a line of poetry or quote or something to go with the image.

for a coffee table book, are we talking 35-50 images or pages?

also, generally for a book is it usually just one collection or a few of them? I've never really seen one done.

There are no correct answers to your questions. It's all a matter of personal taste. As Johanna said, minimum is 20 pages through most places. But anymore than 20 and you will be paying a per page charge as well as the base price. Depending on the physical size of the book (8x8, 10x10, 8.5x11, etc.) you need to decide if you want one image on a page or a dozen. I do at least one book a year, but only for personal use (family pictures). Check out some of Melethia's books. //www.blurb.com/search/site_search?search=melethia

it's a damn bummer that the sofobomo project died without the organizers finding anyway to keep the archives maintained somewhere, but that was an incredible collection of about 500 photo books, all produced during four separate 60-day periods.

you might browse through the stuff people have for sale on blurb. your next bet would be to hit barnes & nobles.

i've done a number of books, ranging from 20-298 pages. i prefer using adobe indesign for laying them out as that gives me maximum control. i also work with a two-page, full-bleed template, where i drop in large jpegs typically composited in photoshop. visually, i've found that if i put more than 4 images on a page, it's just too much; if i'm trying to get something across that requires more images, i need to add pages rather than trying to cram more onto a page.

if you're interested, here are some of mine:
genesis revisited
robbin thompson
dpc in nyc
in our backyard
i am here because

and the grandmother of what not to do...
2010 retrospective

i think 50 pages and maybe 100 images is a nice target, offering a mix of two-page double-truck images, a lot of single-image pages, and then balancing the rest between 2, 3, & 4 images.

it can be a PITA to get going, but once you get the hang of it, it's very fun and rewarding.

good luck!

Some (at least one!) of the books are still available through links on this archived SoFoBoMo page I found using the WayBack Machine ... I also have a few of the books from 2009 and 2011 which I downloaded as PDF files -- I can send those to anyone who wants using YouSendIt if you PM me an email address.
