I know a few of us have been doing this with the price of the 5D2 especially dropping recently and with the release of the 6D and I know a lot more are on the fence, so I thought I would throw out some thoughts on the swap now I have 2 weeks.... It's NOT meant to be a review and no pics as I'm just typing off the top of my head.....
Some background:
- I grew up on old film formats larger then 35mm FF (620 & 127) but moved to 35mm FF in the late 80's (go ahead... google "film" - think low capacity CF card with no instant view :-) ), so for me the "crop" bodies have always been a bit forced in ways I cannot put words around.
- I used the 20D for @5 years then swapped to the 7D for the last couple of years, so I'm not exactly a must have every new body type.
- I know people disagree but I have never been happy with the noise I see with MY 7D images (otherwise I love that body).
Random Thoughts:
- The 5D2 is so much like the 20D for the focus system it's kinda funny in a sad way.
- The centre 5d2 point is better then what you hear on the web... it's not the 7D center point but it's not at all bad. Sitting in front of the tv at night with both... sometimes the 5d2 gets focus better then the 7d in low light but it's just the odd time and generally I put 5d2 centre slightly worse then the 7D outer points.
- The outer focus points on the 5d2 are just plain crap in lower light (meaning anything less then direct sunlight in mid summer); what you hear on the web is understated :-/ - This is a hassle for me because I will have to use it differently from the 7D.
- The noise of the 5d2 is light years better then the 7d in my view. I was happy with iso 5000 but it fails too much past 5K to my eyes.
- The liveview & movie ergonomics on the 5d2 are poor compared to the 7d - mostly because of that button-switch combo on the 7d that is not on the 5d2.
- The 5d2 seems to collect dust on the mirror when I have never seen that on the 7d.... might be just random with swapping lenses but seems odd I would notice it been so different right away.
- The shutter on the 5d2 has a weight that you feel that is not there on crop..... I assume that might mean mirror lockup would be more important because the mirror slap is quite a lot more noticeable.
- I really miss the focus system customisation of the 7D focus points and sets..... 5d2 is old style with no customisation.
- The other change was swapping the 10-22 for the 17-40 and you need to include that in the cost.
- I find the 17-40 better then the 10-22 for sharpness/contrast EXCEPT I see a lot more edge distortion on the 5d2 using 17-40 vs the 7d using 10-22... 17 is also not quite as wide as 10 on a crop..... but I'm not a huge wide shooter, so that is not going to bother me much.
Overall:
- I am keeping the 7D because the 5d2 will not completely replace that for me but if your only doing portrait stuff then right now is a great time to swap with little cost. That's why the 5d3 is so much more $$ in my view as it merges both in a way.
- The 7D is better in every way EXCEPT the sensor.
- The 5d2 images are gorgeous when you load them into the computer. To my old eyes they have more depth but they don't have the detail that I sometimes see on the 7D.
Anyway.... maybe someone will find some of this ramble helpful... or not :-) |

LOL @ your description of film. I moved from a 20D to 7D to 5D III (with a few in between) and agree on most counts. Distortion on the 17-40 probably isn't bad unless you're used to the 10-22, in which case it's appalling, and that 1mm makes a surprising difference. I found the inexpensive 14mm Rokinon/Bower/Samyang lens plus PTLens software ($25) to be a brilliant solution for wide angle. You can't use filters with it (I'll keep the 17-40 for waterfalls), but the lens is very sharp and insanely wide. Example here.

Thom Hogan wrote about the same thing on Nikon, from a much more wonky, Hoganish perspective. I have definitely had the lens selection issues, but I think he overstates some of the other problems. |

agreed on the focus points, while there are times i wish the 5D2 had the focus system of the MK3, I mostly do portraits so it's not a deal breaker for me |

I read Hogan's comments the other day and was thinking Uh? I was lucky with the lens thing - although I still have some DX lenses, I had only bought FF lenses for quite a while before I bought the D800 |
