just got my sandisk ultra II 512 card and it sucks!
here's the performance record :Simpletech 256 regular read/write cost40 bucks at Sams club. shot 8 images in 5 seconds 11 seconds to write to CF card
Sandisk ultra II claimed 9meg write 10meg read shot 8 frames in 5 seconds and took 12 seconds to complete writing to card. very dissapointing. I called sandisk and they said my camera, a nikon D70, may not support ultra II but the manual says it supports ultra II 256 - could the fact that my card is a 512 ultra II be the culprit>? thanks everyone!

It isn't a problem with the Ultra II; cameras can only write data so fast. It is like buying "80X CD-R" media, but only having a CD writer that writes at 24X. Those 80X CD-R's will work fine in your writer, but it will only burn at 24X. Same thing with CF cards. You can buy the best, fastest card out there, but your camera can only write so fast...

The good news however, is that when you fill that card up and place it in a lickety-split USB 2.0 or firewire card reader it will crank out the images so you can spend time editing instead of anticipating the lifespan of a status bar..

well, okay I Understand that part, but I bought the faster card because I thought it was needed to achieve the claimed 3 fps of the D70. currently it shoots about 1.25 fps regardless of the type and speed of the card |

I have both a Sandisk and a non brand name and i find some difference in camera but for card reader loading there is no difference. |

According to dpreview the frame rate with a Sandisk UII should be 2.9fps for the first 4 images in RAW mode or 2.9fps for the first 12 images in JPEG fine. Tests were done with a 2gb SanDisk UII.
When they later mapped it out to mb/sec they came up with ~ 4mb/sec which doesn't really make use of the increased write speeds of the Ultra media. The D70 supports many different types of media, but support doesn't equal "makes full use of". To put it in perspective, the same test done on a Canon 300D showed 1.2mb/sec and the EOS-1D mkII writes "...at a blistering 6.5mb/sec"
You may not be able to use the Ultra II / Extreme write speed on the D70, but the increased read speed is something you'll notice and enjoy after a long shoot. There's also definite quality differences in digital media, and SanDisk is good stuff.

Check that noise reduction is disabled in the custom menu. That could be the culprit. The type of card can affect the number of frames that you can take in a burst, but shouldn't have any impact on the frame rate until the buffer is full.
I have the 256 Ultra II and notice a slight speed increase in reviewing and zooming in on pictures in-camera.
The selling point of the Ultra II cards with the D70 is that supposedly it will take 3 fps until the card is full with Large resolution, Standard compression set - I can't confirm that this is true as I have no reason to take ~ 140 continuous shots of anything.

Once again the DCP members RULE!! a big thanks to Maverick for pointing out the culprit... the noise reduction selection. I switched it over and here are the updated numbers....simpletech off brand media 24 images in 10 seconds and 30 second write to card time
sandisk 29images in 10 seconds 34 second write to card time
thanks Ben!
