Almost anything but the cheapest laptops will fit the bill currently.
Just was at K-Mart, and saw several laptops under $400 that would probably work for you.
Toshiba w/4G memory, 650G hard drive, 15.5" screen
Any laptop with a minimum of 4G memory, 500G hard drive, 14" or bigger screen. Desirable would be a quad core processor, an Intel I-3, I5 or I7 processor, AMD dual or quad core processor.
Fantastic would be a 32+G SSD (solid state drive) for your op sys, combined with a larger hard drive.
Laptops in the past 3 months are equal or better than almost any laptop available 1+ years ago.

You might check your car insurance / u-haul insurance - there may be a way for them to cover the damage. |

I ran a quick search and found some specs for this computer at Office Depot ($449 with rebates) and it seems like it will run PS at least adequately. The processor is a dual core model made by AMD rather than the more common Intel (i3,i5,i7) and I'm not sure how robust it is- but probably not too bad for the price. It has USB3 which will be a plus for your external drive images, and 6GB of RAM isn't so bad and you can add more if you want to. The graphics processor is integrated as part of the processor chip rather than being separate, but that's to be expected in this price range.
The screen resolution is not very high considering it has a 17" screen and I think that will be the weakest part of the computer. You probably can't expect really good color from a screen in this price range. Just be aware of that and know that when editing you may not see all the color that is ideal. You could hook it up to an external monitor at some point, but I would worry that the integrated graphics might not drive it very well. So try to bring some images on a thumb drive and make sure you can live with that screen before you buy- it "might" not be so bad.
Good luck and sorry about your mishap :( |

Hi Monica,
I don't know that I would be the best qualified here to help with your purchase in that I have switched over to using Macs for about four years now. Hopefully others who have recently purchased in your price range ( I would state it again) and did research will chime in. I really don't know if getting an AMD processor instead of Intel which might be a little more expensive is to your advantage because sometimes Adobe for example designs their software to perform well with certain popular processors and I'm not sure they pay a lot of attention to AMD. Again, others can chime in.
I do think you can probably get better advice on the advantages of the various models by reading online reviews rather than listening to some kid salesman who might be on commission. And a site like www.newegg.com would likely have better reviews given that they mostly sell computer hardware rather than office depot, etc. And I will say that Costco has good return policies should you find something that works for you there and can't wait to have something shipped from newegg, etc.
Hope that helps a little! :) |
