I have a little spending cash for xmas for something for myself and I am thinking about getting a lens. I have a T1i and currently have the two kits (18-55 and 55-250) and a 50mm f1.8.

I am actually considering something in 20-35mm range for a prime (something 35-50mm in 35m equiv) or one of these almost-all-in-ones.

I think the zoom would probably get the most use and keep me from changing lenses. If I go zoom, which one? Thoughts?

Too broad of a question? how about just the two zooms, I know people on here have them both, why one over the other?

Ok, I'll bite. Of the two zoom lenses you have decided on, I would choose the 15-85 simply because of the wider focal length and the slightly longer zoom range. That should save you from switching between your two kit lenses so much. As far as the primes, well, if you want wider aperture for low light shooting at shorter focal lengths, then certainly a prime would be better.

Hope that helps because I don't have a more technical answer for you.

Um, I think you got that backwards.

I have the 18-135 and it is a good lens. The 15-85 is a higher quality lens, however. I guess it depends on whether that extra bit of sharpness and better build quality are the important aspects, or if the focal range is the important item.

yes agree that the 18-135mm is a good lens to have.. not got one yet but maybe in the future :O) but its one potential i would consider without a doubt

but until then, i use on my 550d the 18-55, 55-250, 50mm f1.8, Rokonin 8mm, and my new 85mm f1.8 and have no need for anything else really even the 18-135mm at this stage so maybe look at others to add on, depends what photography your interested in doing? all the above handle all my need with the two additional prime lenses... as well as some screw mounted close up magnifiers, and some new filters i havent even used yet keeps me fully able to deal with most situations..

I may not have given enough info in my original statement. (My wife hates when I do that!) I meant to say that compared to the 18-55 which is in his kit, the 15-85 would give him a wider focal length and a slightly longer zoom range allowing him to possibly switch out to the 55-250 a little less often. He has the focal range of the 18-135 covered with his current kit. Having the 18-135 would give him a little more of the telephoto zoom range in one lens, but he would still need to switch out to that 55-250 at times. So since he has the zoom range covered with his current kit in two lenses, why not go wider and buy the 15-85 and keep the 18-55 at home.

Therefore, the kit would be the 15-85, 55-250 and the 50mm prime.

I am recommending the 15-85 as I always enjoyed highnooner's shots with it.

the 85mm 1.8 prime you mentioned is an absolutely fantastic lens. you see some issues as you open it up, but given the price - and the fact that you have more or less a good range of focal distance covered with midrange lenses, the 85mm sounds like an excellent purchase. If you look for a used, you're likely to find something close to $300 ish on ebay.

That makes more sense in that context. It sounded like you were talking in comparison to the 18-135, as that was his other option.

When I take my camera on the bike, the 18-135 is normally what is attached. It gives me a good wide end and a good amount of zoom, long enough for almost everything but airshows or wildlife. Not so much zoom that I lose long end image quality, however.

Thanks for the input, and now I have to consider an 85mm too!

P.s I bought a 40mm pancake lens just because I wanted to have it and it is cheap.
