It's interesting to look at the work of people (who were pioneers in the field of photography), which is now considered "influential", etc. It goes to prove that aesthetics are in a constant state of flux, tastes change, and what was once considered cutting edge, is now hard to see. It seems almost unfair to compare work created then to what is done now. I feel somewhat the same way about Cindy Sherman's early work. While I appreciate their pioneering efforts, their aesthetic doesn't do it for me. I much prefer the classic work of HCB or the mind-bending, provocative work of Francesca Woodman.

"Art" is subjective and mostly a matter of personal taste.

Agreed Johanna, and thank you, Francesca is wonderful to explore, she is similar to what is going on at Art Limited , a great site to contribute to. With Egg, I was more interested in his lifestyle and his modus operandi since that was quite a focus of the doco. It was interesting that even he thought his environment boring and bland yet conjured his imagination into producing good work (given he was an early adopter). I appreciate the work is dated, I am really more interested in his mindset and work ethic rather than the the equipment or success timeline. I particularly like how he only shoots once, at random with inherent classic composition then moves on and leaves that behind, dreams in colour, seemed a dual personality and was always looking in that photog way.

Very interesting to watch. The biggest confirmation for me is that one has to shoot what one wants to. Perhaps you'll be 50 years ahead or behind the trend, but that you cannot control.

Very interesting site, John. And another reason that "different" was such a big deal 40 years ago, and able to break through the clutter. Now, everyone is different and there are so many ways and places to show and be seen, that breaking out is rather miraculous. So much talent everywhere, and societal norms much more accepting of experimentation.
