What the hell is an Omni-Bounce and what does it do?

I'm getting a speedlite 550ex and 1 or 2 accessories for it (if I find I need them)

Any other accessories that people have found useful when getting their external flashes??

I think thats a soft light bounce that velcros to your flash?? I have one but really dont use it too often? I also use a 550, and The bounce and catch-light work well on their own? I guess it depends on what your shootin?

use your bounce as often as possible!
It softens the light on your subject so your not getting the dreaded shadow. Put the bounce card on or pull it out of the speedlight, point the flash head up, and fire away :)

Does the 550EX have this pull-out bounce built-in?

It has a catch light built it. It is used for wide angle and a catch light with a bounce.

Yes the 550EX does. (the 420EX which I have :{ does not)

The omnibounce is a plastic "box" that fits onto the head of the flash. It works best indoors where it can work to distribute light from the flash all around, hence the name 'omnibounce'. It depends on nearby walls and ceilings to bounce light and produce an even, soft-shadowed lighting.

I have NO complaints and I have used it for a year and a half! Although I had a rebel as a backup, adn you cant exposure compensate through the camera....That was bad!

Sto-Fen OmniBounce on B&H's website

Adrian's right on about using it indoors but I also use it outside sometimes, too, as it can be counted on to cut down the light output on a flash like the 420 which doesn't have a manual setting. It also gives a slight color cast quite often.

In this shot

I had the 550EX mounted on a flash bracket (Newton Di400CR) with the LumiQuest ProMax 80/20 Pocket Bounce with white insert. When I fired the 550EX dialed down -2/3 step, the 550 made the 420EX fire at full power for the scene that the 10D metered and I ended up with an almost totally dark scene converted to look like the sun was shining through the bamboo from the left side of the photo.

Here's an example of the same setting just a few seconds before without any flash.
