I really haven't been keeping track of Canon bodies, but in this comparison, what would the advantages of the 5D2 be leaving cost aside? Anything? I have some money coming in after the new year and it may be time for some upgrading... :)

I guess while we're at it, what would be the advantages of the 5D3 over the 6D?

Thanks for that link Jason.

I don't get why folks are skipping the $1600 5DII body. Still relevant despite the marketing, presuming you don't need the AF update.

That was true of the 7D battery all the way back to 2009. 3rd party batteries will work fine, but most don't have Canon's proprietary chip to report status to the camera.

How important the 1/8000 vs 1/4000 in real life?

This pic was shot with 5DMK3 at 1/5000 - F1.4 at ISO 100. On 6D would not be able to shot it...

I can't get the link to work, but I view 1/8000 as more of a convenience. I haven't had a situation where I needed more freezing power than 1/4000. I'm sure it exists, but it's very rare, and most times you can use a flash to get even better frozen motion without rolling shutter distortion.

If I know I'm going to be shooting something that is so bright it will cap my shutter, it's easy to throw on an ND filter.

I just ordered a 5d2 (just under 1500 new)... Would I like wifi & gps - yeah, would I like the better af in center of the the 6d - yeah, am I going to swear at the 5d2 after the 7d focus system - yeah, is it worth the extra $500 to the 6d or $2000 to the 5d3... I have a budget and have to stop somewhere (just thankful my budget for this stuff is higher then most so I can swing a 5d2).

Now if they slip a 5d3 in the shipment by mistake and not charge me, would I be upset :-)

the 5d2 AF isn't that bad so long as you don't expect it to do what it cant. shooting landscape and portraits its perfectly capable for. use your 7D when you have to track fast moving objects.

Exactly! - That's why I plan to keep the 7D rather then sell it to offset the 5d2 because I do shoot some kids soccer and basketball..... so the 5d2 will not replace the 7d by any means.

The way I read it for my uses, the 6D/5D2 is not a match for the 7D speed stuff (fps, focus system, tracking control e.t.c.) and the 7D is not a match for the FF sensor. So I pick the body for what I want that day instead of having it wrapped into a single body of the 5d3 (which looks like a FF 7D with some upgrades to me).

I agreed! for me I did upgrade from 50D to 6D that was a big jump for me knowing the 6D features!

I did my research and I believe I would need higher speed in case if I am going to any sports event or something that I would need to have over 4000. It all depends on what type of photography you do.

My concern is not sports, as a rarely shot sports. The concern is if want a shallow DOF in bright light and as per the link posted. That was shot with 5DMK3 at 1/5000 - F1.4 at ISO 100.

On 6D would not be able to shot it unless use the ISO50 that would be one stop, right? And carry a ND filter would also take care, I think. So I guess is more a DOF control rather then a stop motion and it could be indeed convenient to have and not use it rather then need it and not have it (ha!)

I've have shot the Ducks at Autzen Stadium for four years now and I can't say I've ever needed/wanted 1/8000 versus 1/4000. Just my own experience.

today I made the mistake of asking the sales clerk to let me try out the 6d.... I mounted my 24-105 and seriously seriously could not believe the difference. I'm in love at first sight. immediate autofocus perfection in a millisecond on a dreary day in low light ... and at 100% they are completely sharp (and more importantly without a trace of CA, something that plagues this lens on my 550D.)

i'm currently trying to figure out which body parts/L lenses I need to sell to be able to justify buying it.

eta: i must admit i was also overjoyed at seeing the 24 mm length at 24 mm for the first time. Amazing difference.

I am really not surprised, LOL. I have been quite impressed with the 6D, once I've gotten past the interface differences. I very much like the camera, and in particular the high-ISO image quality has impressed me. I'm looking forward to doing more shooting with it on occasions when I can liberate it temporarily from its prison atop the microscope :-)

I had some time and went to Canon Hong Kong where I could play with the 6D. I actually liked the handling and felt very good in the hands, especially as I am coming from the 40D.

The lack of a white balance direct access button is OK for me. The top pannel has 5 as opposed to 4 buttons that share the functions.
My finger was though constantly looking for the joystick but I don't think is a big issue with the pad that replace it.

I did tried it with the 24-105 and the canon 1.4 50 mm and the focus in the center was spot on, fast accurate. It seemed to work fine focusing on the darkest corners of the room. The other 10 points where OK, noting I could complain (compared with the 40D). They do seem too close but this is the FF.

I got to connect my iPhone to it and that was fun. I could imagine placing camera somewhere in a corner, on a restaurant table, on a tripod in park ah happily snapping and controlling the settings. You have access aperture, ss in P, A, T and M modes. Then you do get a resized copy, without exif, directly in your smartphone to check it out and do whatever you can do with a pic in a phone. It did have a bit of lag but not bad. Also nice was that you could touch screen to set the focus. It worked in both landscape and portait mode.

I am pretty much waiting for the cash now and ignore any second thoughts that I might have (... not camera related)

Check my wining entry for last week's challenge ;)

Also see other 6D entries that I have either submitted in past or in progress! I am impressed with the quality and it is awesome!
