I decided I was going to go out and shoot something while all the kiddos were in school. that gave me approximately 2 & 1/2 hours. so I go driving to one particular area I wanted to shoot... there was a plumbing van smack dab in the middle of the shot. no other angle would have sufficed. so I drive to another area... it's not acceptable either.
so I drive around for inspiration... trying to find something...
nothing.
finally, about the time I think of another location, only 15mins away from where I was, I can't find parking, because it's downtown and everything is meter parking or lot parking, and honestly, I don't have $8 to spend on parking to casually shoot for 45mins.
so, I drive to books a million and sit down and read a book on photography for 30mins.
then I head over to the school to sit and wait for my kiddos to get out. hence why I am back in the forums.
but... now I know where I'm headed tomorrow... because it's supposed to be overcast again... and this time, I will park a couple blocks away in the fast food parking lot and walk to my destination. time prohibited that option today.
think I might set up my periodic table shot again and reshoot. |

| been there, done that. it's disappointing. spontaneous photography requires careful planning. ;-) |

| ruins my life. also trying to decide if I am going somewhere to shoot or sort of as if I happen to be there and shooting: if it is purposeful and I don't get a good one I hit myself on the head; if casual and I get a good shot I win the lottery without buying the ticket. Hmn. Maybe another thwack on the head. |

| Driving around aimlessly more-or-less describes 85% of my life as a photographer, LOL. I mean, I more-or-less have an idea, usually, what I'm hoping to accomplish, but the rest of it's serendipity, unless I'm returning to a specific place at a specific time with a defined goal in mind, which happens less and less as I get older and older :-) |

I actually like the driving around aimlessly in hopes of finding a good shot.
It's some of the best "us" time my hubby and I have. A chance to talk with minimal distraction while still working towards a common goal. |

Yep, same here although it's more walking around aimlessly. I occasionally have a project on the go and a general idea of something but mostly i'll just see what happens. I love walking and exploring and getting lost so it all ties into together. Usually what i find happens though is that it takes a while to start happening-the first hour or so nothing will catch my eye and i'll start feeling like this whole photography business is a waste of time, Then i'll relax into it and get in a kind of zone and interesting things start happening then and i'll usually get a photograph or two out of a hundred or so that i'll really like. That makes it worth it. |

| actually I walk way more than drive, and if I allow myself enough time I have no idea where I will end up; often the walk will be worth way more than the photos, which can be, I admit, a sort of waste of time if I am trying to get something right, though possibly I am learning something... It is the gamble ramble shamble. |

| Man, I miss the days where I would just wake up and spend the whole day cruising the island looking for something to catch my eye. Maybe I'll start that up again when my 5d mk II gets here on Friday :) |

My girlfriend & I generally put more than 10K miles a year on this......
The objective is to drive around aimlessly, find places we've never been before, and trust me when I say you have no idea what you miss driving around in a closed car as a photographer.
Lost on a sunny afternoon? Oh, YEAH!!!

I'm not saying I don't enjoy it... but I'm pressed for time when I do it. AND, there are so many narrow roads with NOWHERE to pull off that oftentimes I miss a shot I wish I could get.
on top of that, you gotta be careful around here... the hills of WV can be dangerous... loaded shotguns and country people not afraid to shoot. lol
seriously, many times I will scout out the area, whatever is nearby, and go back another day when I have more time.
I wish my hubby would do that with me... he's more of a get-in-the-car-and-get-to-where-you're-going-no-stopping kinda guy. |

| You know what I've learned to do if I'm walking around aimlessly and can't find anything that catches my eye? I put a different lens on the camera (if I have one). Like a macro. Opens up a whole new world of possibilities! |

that is an excellent remedy for the photo blahs. however when I go for a walk I choose one camera, and if it is the Pentax then I choose one lens and live with it, and hopefully learn it a little more. |
