I've just been looking through the price list for the Canon Expo starting in my city this morning and happened to notice a listing for the Canon EOS 60Da (Astrophotography Version). I didn't even know that this camera existed until now.

A quick search for sample photos has so far only produced photos of the sky - not something of particular interest to me. However, among its product highlights B&H mentions infrared sensitivity. Does this mean that this camera would be useful for ordinary infrared photography without adding filters?

If so this may be of interest to me as there seems to be nobody in South Africa who does conversions of cameras, and I've always been reluctant to have a camera sent overseas for conversion.

Ah, if it were only so. But no. The 60Da has increased sensitivity to very near IR so that the hydrogen alpha emission line at 656 nm is imaged better. This is very important for astrophotography. It also has a strong IR blocking filter for longer IR wavelengths, so it will not do what you wish. Truly, the only avenue that IR landscape photogs have is a conversion.

Thanks kirbic. That's actually a bit of a relief as I wasn't really planning to spend that kind of money on a camera right now. That would have put paid to any plans of an Olympus OMD in my near future and the mirrorless would probably be a more useful purchase.
